What should I buy to record my bands songs?

I plan on getting a multiple track recorder but which one should I get......
Approx. I have 500 dollars......PLease list me some good multi Track recorders!
And how do I record us playing?
Should we all play our instruments in the same time and then record the voice over it?

any tascam or fostex portable recorder will do fine, get an 8 track if you need it.

those portable recorders are pretty cheap and do the trick fine, but you could also get those digital one's, I think they are in that price range...

get the fostex MR-8, its 300 dollars (american). I've got it, it rules. You dont have to play at the same time, you can just play one after the other and record the vocals over it later.

You might want to go for a 12 track too.

why would you need 12 tracks man?

8 tracks are more then enough, I know bands who record their demo on freaking 4 tracks, they just mix the drums onto one track and the guitars too. it works for them.

8 tracks are ideal, but 12 seems like a bit much to me and they cost heaps more..

Do I record all the instruments playing at once and then
mix it with the vocals?

For example;
-we record the instrumental parts in one track for
instance (all guitars, bass, and drums are in one track)
-then we record the vocal parts

is that how it goes?
its kinda hard recording drums, guitar, bass, and vocal seperately
So do you think my idea would be good?

the boss 8 track that burns cds also goes for over US$1K minimum.

the 8 track without the burner should be more in your price league, and its always worth paying more to get the best.

as for recording, using the onboard mic would be good but youre gonna get a garage sound, so if thats your thing.
meaning, youll need to get a decent balanced group sound otherwise the mix will be shit.

I agree with piper. How exactly do you keep everything in the right tempo?

scratch track

that's what a scratch track is for. record everything to one mic on one track. then go back and record each instrument to each track. also avoid bouncing tracks unless you absolutely have to. it degrades your quality and you can't adjust the levels and add effects to each track before the final mix.

I have decided to go in a studio and record.....
By the way approximately how much will it cost to
record 5 songs, averaging at 23 minutes......
And what are procedures done in a studio?
I don't wanna look like a jackass not knowing what to do
