Death and Black Metal Bassists
Could you guys rattle off some names of some bassists in those two genres whose basslines you can actually sort of hear? I know most of them follow the guitar rather direct, but there have to be at least a few that stand out, I'm hoping...

children of bodoms bass sticks out in a lot of songs. Try In The Shadows by CoB....Marduk has some good basslines like in the song Dark Endless.

Matt Langois from Cryptopsy's slap stands out at times, And the dude from Cephalic Carnage too, he's crazy, he plays some cool stuff, but like most other DM/BM bands they just fit into the mix alot too, but not as much.

The bassist from arch enemy, in the song Savage messiah, its got a melodic intro and then goes heavy and then goes melodic again and thats where u hear the bass after the first few guitar riffs, i mean you dont usually hear him in most of the songs of the ''wages of sin'' album..but thats a cool song
the guy from vader aswell you can hear him plucking away on some of the songs

I think that Steve di Giorgio is the best bassist in the death/black scene...You can hear him on several Death albums but Sadus is my favorite....he's great...
Other bands where the bass can be heard quite nicely, Benediction, Sinister, Hypocrisy

As for the Black metal part, I can't really say, I'm not a real big fan of black metal but I know I love Immortal's Damned in Black, the bass really stands out there...you can also hear some clear bass on some Dimmu Borgir tracks...of course, if you consider that to be Black metal...
You could check out Morbid Angel, the bass work there is very interesting, you can't hear the bass very clear but once you figure it out it's pretty cool.
Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse is also very good...i just love death metal bassists that play with their fingers... ...too bad I don't

Hehe, "I could check out Morbid Angel" that just struck me as funny, cuz they're my favorite band, Dave Vincent was the shit
I'll get the Immortal song, but I haven't heard too much clear bass on Dimmu's stuff...

Well, it just happends that Morbid Angel is my favourite band too, David Vincent was awesome, especially on Covenant and Domination...
About Immortal...it's the whole album Damned in Black, not just the song...

Ahh ok, my mistake...
I think Vincent's best works were Altars and Domination.

Alex Webster, Steve Di Giorgio......there are quite few death metal bassists that play with their fingers.....actually....I know no black metal bassists that pick with their fingers......guess it's just too damn fast....
I saw John Myung from Dream Theater play a Napalm Death song...does that count? ...gues not...

I don't understand much about it but i'd say a lot of good brutal death metal bands play independent bass lines that can be heard. I like particulary Cryptopsy and Severe Torture

...about blackmetal
Mayhem "de mysteriis dom sathanas" has a lot of very nice bass riffs or at least a lot of bass riffs that fit very nice in the songs. I love the guitar work and how the production allows to hear very well the two guitars and the bass.

I agree that David Vincent's best stuff is on Altars of Madness! Of course it is very simple when he sings but otherwise it is good. His stuff isn't as noticeable in Domination I find ...
As for Alex Webster, well I just recently got into CC enough to buy albums, I bought The Bleeding and was amazed by some of the stuff he does.
Steve DiGorgio was always one of my favorites. I guess he is one of the first bassists many people might discover since he was in so many bands of different styles (Death, TestAmenT, Iced Earth)

Hah , Varg played bass on the mysteriis dom sathanas. For me the greatest bassists of all times (in black metal) are
Pier Couquet from Anorexia Nervosa ( i started playing bass because i wanted to play like him)
Gillaume from Furia
Morgan from Marduk
Abbath from Immortal
and its hard to admit but Robins (cradle of shit) work in Dusk and Her Embrace is great.. especially in songs like A gothic Romance or Funeral in Carpathia

I can hear all of Cradle of Filth's bass lines very well as I can with any Black Metal bands.
A bassist that uses his fingers is ICS Vortex in Dimmu Borgir

haha my bass sticks out, but besides the point, As I Lay Dying in some songs the bass is sort of noticeable, then again anytime I listen to Alternative Metal or Death Metal I am only listening to hear the bass sometimes, anyways thats about it. Sorry if that was no help, even though they aren't crazy Metal, Rage Against the Machine you hear the bass all the time.

I'm not sure of the bassist's name I think the lead guitarist plays the bass in this band as well, or at least this CD but...Broken Hope-Grotesque Blessings.
Especially the song "Wolf Among Sheep". The bass is pretty sweet.

Hmm.. I'd say:
Kataklysm's bassist-stephane
Cannibal Corpse's-paul
Suffocations bassist
Death and Sadus-when Steve Digiorgio was in there
Mortician's-will rahmer
No more that I can think of in my 10 years of bass-playing experience.

I cant find a bass tab for it (lord of all fevers and plague - morbid angel) but unless you see it then theres not much else i can say. Looks like steve tucker doesnt play it nearly as technical as david vincent and jared anderson did live.

From my limited experience of watching bassists live and in videos, I'd say you shouldn't go by how it looks when they play. Some bassists' technique makes it look like they're going nuts, but then if you listen it's not THAT crazy. I'm not saying this is the case in this situation, but often looks deceive.

I don't think anyone mentioned him yet, but Tyr (Vintersorg, Borknagar session, Emperor and Satyricon and probably others touring) is also a killer bass player, he uses his fingers on a 5 stringer, I think.
Lars Norberg (Spiral Architect, Satyricon touring) is another killer bass player, and he too is on the five-strings.
Here's a site I found a while ago when I was bored one evening http://www.bassistsofdeath.cjb.net/ It has a lot of good bass players on there (not all death / black metal bassists though) as well as some tabs and some sound samples of good playing.

You mean Satyr? I think I've heard someone say Tyr once before. Are you just abbreviating or am I just wrong in thinking it's Satyr. Anyways I own Rebel Extravaganza but I don't remember hearing anything really impressive for bass. Then again I've only listened to it a couple of times, how stupid. Now I want to listen to that again. Supersonic Journey!

I say do away with it. You can always stand in its former location if you need to make use of the perspective it gave you, but will benefit from the ability to situate yourself in different loci with ease.

No, Tyr (real name Jan Erik) is an amazing bass player who uses a six string bass and uses the three finger picking approach...the way he uses his technique is very...smooth and odd to say the least. He accents certain notes to break that triplet feel, very, very good.

For finger picking, I find accenting notes is extremely difficult. It's of course easy when you're playing moderate stuff, but when picking fast 32nd notes for example, I just can't seem to accent the first of every four or anything like that. You would think it would be easy for me because I use 4 fingers so every time it is the same finger that should be accenting, but I just can't control it well. I find it's even more difficult when you're picking quickly in groups of three notes.
Sorry about the digression, but I didn't think it was worth it to start a new thread just about accenting notes. Few would answer.

Corpse in studio
Heres for all you Alex Webster fans out there, or Cannibal Corpse fans in general. CC recording "Frantic Disembowelment" in the studio, check out websters technique.....in-fucking-sane! It's a 15 MB download so it might take awhile if you arent using high-speed.
Download it here : http://www.savefile.com/files/3436381
Cheers
(by the way, it's an AVI file...so you might need DIVX to play it, I'm not sure)

if you consider Halo metal...its hard stuff but you have to hear the bass because the only instruments are bass and drums and the bassist screams.
