That the Other Might Not Be There Forever
Poem, not song, inspired by a piece a friend wrote and my own life events. Thanks for reading.
"That the Other Might Not Be There Forever"
Once prayed for when the opposite sex seemed driveling and dumb
Or only out for themselves
Marriage not quite met with realistic expectations
But in youth thoughts and words never manifested
To cause change or hope of it
Happinesses here and there and children much loved beyond measure
Demanded change and stubbornness
Divorced on paper to start over
That never truly happened in heart
Maintenance of thought
Hazardous waste yet realizations of youth's folly
Pick your battles and realize most aren't even worth it
Two separate people, two same people
Together again, come what may
Invasions of body
Unforeseen yet known by other's catastrophes
We might be the others we've encountered
Melancholic embrace of unspoken what ifs in the kitchen
That the other might not be there forever
Even though parted and regained
Mortality finally a valid mental presence
Reassuring pat on the hand stretched around me
I continue washing dishes
