They are talking about clinical depression, not sadness. Clinical depression is a mental illness. Sadness is a mood that comes and goes with the appropriate stimuli. Clinical depression is a chemical imbalance that can't be controlled without strong medication. Clinical depression can cause the sadness you talk about, but it doesn't necessarily, and frequently the two won't be associated at all.
Clinical depression is more frustrating than saddening. What it usually does is kill a person's energy levels, leaves them disinterested in their main interests, robs them of their will to complete daily chores and activities, destroys their sex drive, causes bizarre and frequent mood swings, and causes detachment from friends, significant others, and family. It makes every daily activity you engage in and many of us frequently take for granted 100 times harder than they should be.
People who suffer from depression often go through prolonged "down" periods where they find it extremely difficult to get out bed, to maintain personal hygeine (brushing teeth, showering, combing hair, etc.), to eat or to stop eating, to engage in any physical activity, to work, to engage in any sexual activity, and even to maintain meaningful conversations with friends and loved ones. They often find it extremely hard to fall asleep and harder still to wake up!
Interestingly, those suffering from clinical depression are more likely than those who don't to suffer from anxiety disorders.
