Classic Must Have Albums!
What extreme metal albums do you think every metal head should own or at least hear?
No new(er) albums! Well known albums are fine to mention because i'm sure there are classic albums that have passed some of us by!
Carcass- Heartwork(1993)
-A must have for every Melo-Death fan
Anata- The Infernal Depths Of Hatred(1998)
-Excellent Debut release from a Death Metal band that doesn't get as much attention as it deserves!
Death- Symbolic(1995)
-Get this now if you don't have it, no excuses
I have a bunch more to mention, but I'm sure someone else will mention them

Good thread.
Classic, landmark records that every metal fan simply must own:
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Napalm Death - Scum
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten
Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
Meshuggah - Destroy Erase Improve
The Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating Infinity
I would like to have given brief descriptions of why they are classic albums but I'm in work so I don't have the time at the moment.

You don't like black metal if you don't own these.
Leviathan - The Tenth Sub Level of Suicide
New era of of black metal a must for fans of the genra.

Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor (not very old, but an instant classic in my eyes)
Slayer- Seasons in The Abyss
Quo Vadis - Day Into Night
The Crown - Crowned in Terror
Suffocation - Despise the Sun
Testament - First Strike Still Deadly
And how come nobody mentioned Monstrosity?!

Hell yeah man, Sons of Northern Darkness is full of kickass riffs and excellent drumming. Regardless of Abbath's vocals getting on my nerves after a few songs, it is an excellent album.
I'd also like to 2nd Suffocations- Despise the Sun. I'm not a huge Suffocation fan but that EP kicks my ass every listen.
Sepultura- Beneath the Remains! I'm surprised no one's mentioned this. If thrash is your liking, this is one of the best albums in the genre!
Gorgoroth - Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam. Heavy Black Metal at it's best!

Yes, but Battles in the North and Blizzard Beasts is better IMO. This one is just more accessable and well known.
As for Clutch, this album is fucking awesome. The feedback to start the 1st track then that completely crushing 1st riff. Can't get much heavier rock.

Yeah they's cool.
Anyway, since yesterdaynight I must add:
The Red in the Sky is Ours by At the Gates. This dang hot chick sent it to me, holy fffuck.
Oh and her version has this oddity, during Through Gardens of Grief, after say 3 and a half minute out of nowhere, this Balkan DJ or something appears, singing his Balkan discosong for 10 seconds then suddenly it's back to the song.
Anyone else have this?

I'm trying to restrict my nominations to one per genre, and Effigy of the Forgotten gets my vote as the biggest landmark album in brutal death metal.
Actually, thinking about it while typing this post, Nile's In Their Darkened Shrines should indeed make the list! I guess a lot of ethnically-tinged metal would not exist without them (and Powerslave, of course).
Also, did I mention Choronzon by Akercocke? This record is the official last word in blackened death with one of the eeriest atmospheres of any album I've heard.

hahhahahhahahhahahhahhaha. This list is so quality it makes my dog's asshole pucker. The only think I haven't heard is the Tenacious D. I'll rectify the situation promptly. I think Individual Thought Patterns should be replaced with Symbolic, but thats just me. And Metal Church>The Dark any day, I don't care what anyone says.

Is that your full collection of just what you consider to be the "essentials" of your collection? Some decent stuff in there for sure.
