Mastodon - Crack the Skye
Unfortunately but unsurprisingly, its pretty weak. Ever since Leviathan their product has gotten less and less good and it has now come to this. It sounds like that middle-of-the-road hard rock that your best friend's Dad listens to at a moderate volume as he drives home from work. Its Mastodon stripped of its raw anger, energy, and creativity. Its just plain boring!
You can listen to it on their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/mastodon
Thoughts?

I'm not going to click the link, but I'm going to give the album a listen. If it sucks, then I'm done with them. Just like the way I did it with Cephalic Carnage.

I agree with Darko, Crack The Syke is pitifully weak.

Supposedly Brann, Bill, and Troy wrote a heavier batch of songs while Brent wrote the music portion of CtS. So maybe an EP or another album?

Somewhere on their forum. I'll see if I can't find the thread.
EDIT: Here is one, I thought there was another thread but I can't remember anything about it.

I don't care what anyone says - there will not be a better album out this year than Crack the Skye.
I didn't like Blood Mountain at all - I was unhappy about the lack of sludge and harsh vocals, but mostly I just disliked the songs. Ironic then, that despite this album having almost no sludge qualities, and barely any harsh vocals, should resonate so firmly with me. It's a phenomenal album.
Anyone who bought it and expected a purely metal album may well be disappointed, but I've always been a huge prog fan, and this album absolutely blew me away. Its by no means flawless, but I can't see anything this year - with the possible exception of the new Anata album - topping it.

Remission was pretty groundbreaking. Anything after that was ...meh.
Today Is The Day's - In The Eyes Of God was really good, also. It had Brann and the bassist as well.

To my ear, they started out angular and powerful and dynamic, and slowly managed to strip every vestige of interest from that formula over time. I wasn't actually expecting to see people here agreeing with me.
When the best song you've done in the last few years is in the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie, you KNOW you're on the slide.

Haha, absolutely. The reason why that song was any good is probably because they weren't taking themselves very seriously which they are now.
As I think about it, I can imagine them having Warner Bros. breathing down their necks to make material that's more listener-friendly and they're afraid to put out something as raw as Remission because it has a smaller target audience which could spell trouble! But, then again, they could be doing exactly what they want.. either way I'd rather listen to The Wisconsin Elementary School Chalkboard Scratchers Orchestra.

So I've finally listened to some of this instead of speculating wildly. I'm still right.
What the FUCK happened to these guys???????? Are these the guys that wrote the riff to March of the Fire Ants? I have suspected terminal vaginitis in the case of these clowns for some time. This is the final pink lesion. They are now off the register.

Anyone who can call this hard rock has never heard nickleback (that shit is what they call hard rock)
i LOVED blood mountain and all its predecessors and i absolutely love crack the skye
I think you guys dont like it because its too prog - you've mistaken anger with talent - that anger is still there on tracks like divinations but its controlled - this album is tight and im glad they've embraced the prog
This is by far their best album. i thought they wouldn't top blood mountain but they did. And they're still getting better
