The system itself is, indeed, the problem. Here in the US (and most of the world) the system is set up in such a way that they either can't or won't protect the majority of the prisoners from each other. This serves as the major deterrent in those countries from crime; nobody wants to go to prison because everybody knows that, unless you run in a really, really deep gang or white supremacist organization, you will receive absolutely no protection once you get there. Even if you do run in a really deep gang or racist group, your time in the prison will be spent at the mercy of your superiors, and you will be punished severely for relatively minor infractions.

In places like Norway, the main deterrent from prison is having your freedom restricted or, in the case of Christian Vikernes, slightly altered. It's the time out chair. Luckily for them, the crime rate is low enough were strong punishments as deterrent aren't needed as strongly as they are here.

Dude have you seen our prisons?(especially down South I can't say much for our Northern counter parts) A fucking joke the inmates own it basically. I think at a mid security prison guards are out numbered (75-100) to 1. They've had to call in the swat teams and national guard at most of them during those huge 1 week riots. We try to conserve in some sectors while blowing it out the ass in others which isn't much needed because, it's the American way. Our prison system is just point blank in shambles.

During the summertime here the fucking jail is so full, there forced to let people go who haven't served out there full monthly/yearly sentence to make room for incoming no gooders. Need to do like Arizona stick the imprisoned in a tent and 1 meal a day...screw race they'll be sticking together to survive sure as shit then, or be to tired to fight.

Anal rape is a phenomenon in every prison system. But it's almost always exaggerated in media.

And a lot of the problem with the American prison system is that it's absurdly overcrowded and underfunded. There aren't enough guards, and those that are there are often either indifferent (they feel everybody deserves what they get) or only a degree or two removed from the inmates (and so are running game). Even if that weren't the case, if you belong to a major criminal organization there's a good chance that guards will be subject to out of prison retribution - killing a prison guard won't exactly bring the heat like killing a police officer.

But outside of the prison system itself, America is culturally different than other countries. A lax prison system wouldn't necessarily be better here since a lot of people here have taking every inch trained into them from an early age; it's the same reason a permissive teacher at a private school, even one with violent students, will fare better than a similarly permissive teacher at an inner school public school. So while it is the system, it's not just the prison system. It's inherent in the system on every level. Which is also why it's not likely to get better anytime soon.

In any case, Varg isn't a product of American culture or American prisons, and so his experience is, unsurprisingly, much different. And even if it is worse than we're acting, his position as a famous white supremacist almost certainly protected him.

Ambria Renee Spencer

In 2006, inmate Ambrett Spencer, who was incarcerated for drunk driving and was nine months pregnant with a baby girl, complained of severe stomach pains and asked for medical attention. The infirmary nurse, who had no prenatal training, believed the pain was not an emergency. It was two hours before an ambulance was called for Spencer, who in the meantime had passed out from severely low blood pressure and lost so much color that the EMT who arrived at the scene said he knew she was "not getting enough blood to [her] organs and skin." At the hospital -- four hours after first reporting pain -- Spencer gave birth to a dead daughter, Ambria Renee. It was determined that Spencer's pain had been caused by placental abruption, internal bleeding resulting in loss of blood to the baby, which babies can usually survive if the mother is taken to the hospital and labor is quickly induced.

Ambrett Spencer has filed a lawsuit against Maricopa County, which as of November 2008 has not yet gone to trial. The county claims that the ambulance service is at fault for not transporting Spencer to the hospital fast enough.

Other female inmates have had miscarriages while incarcerated in Arpaio's jail and have reported physical abuse or neglect which they believe contributed to the loss of their pregnancies.

Richard Post

Richard Post was a paraplegic inmate arrested in 1996 for possession of marijuana and criminal trespass. Post was placed in a restraint chair by guards and his neck was broken in the process. The event, caught on video, shows guards smiling and laughing while Post is being injured. Because of his injuries, Post has lost much of the use of his arms.[62] Post settled his claims against the Sheriff's office for $800,000.

Nice touch adding a side of permanent injury and long term mental damage to their prison sentences.

Definitely not haha. My dad and brother both worked in a mental institution which had a special "lock up" ward, in which literal axe-murderers and sex offenders were housed, all of them either criminally insane or mentally retarded (I'm not sure what the P.C. term is these days). Many had the mental age of an infant, but were more than capable of tearing a man to shreds!

The hospital had been subject to severe cutbacks, and until a few years ago the lock up ward was the only functioning part of it. Kinda spooky...an essentially empty hospital (which is spooky enough) inhabited by a handful of psychopaths and their friends. My dad told me about his friend who came to pick him up one day, and came into the hospital to meet him, and subsequently vowed never to return. A pretty terrifying place!

Depending on where we're talking about, the mentally retarded may or may not be sent to a regular prison. As far as I know, you can only get off on insanity/mental incompetency, in the US, if you can prove that you don't understand the difference between right and wrong or if you can prove you acted under an 'irresistible impulse' and couldn't have stopped yourself regardless. A lot of mentally retarded people don't qualify for special treatment under those criteria.

That's why I put the word "care" in quotes; I didn't mean it in the literal sense. We have nurses who mistreat residents in homes, but they're still in the "caring profession". If a criminal has the mental age of a child they can't really be put in among "adult" killers and rapists. They need to be protected from other people and themselves, as well as the general public being protected from them. The protocols and routines in mental lock ups are geared specifically to deal with the threats and needs of these kinds of criminals/offenders and wouldn't be applicable in prison, and prison life wouldn't really work if these protocols were transferred there.

The fact of the execution of handicapped people just proves that certain states in the US don't give a shit about them, but elsewhere the handicapped offenders still need to be dealt with by other means. If they weren't to be executed they'd have to go somewhere, and I doubt it'd be prison, even in the aforementioned states where they'd happily fry them.

My point is simply this: yes, somebody with the mental age of a child should be treated differently than a 'normal' adult. But that's not always going to be, and sometimes is not, the case. There are people in the prison system who are mentally retarded; in the 90's at least, mentally disabled offenders were more likely to be sentenced to prison time and to serve more of their prison sentence than non-disabled offenders. Should they have been someplace that's properly equipped to care for them? Without a doubt. But were they? No.

I'm also only talking about certain states in the US. It's not like there are universal standards for prison systems.

Nah. Aryan Brotherhood usually aren't the only white gang in the prisons they populate and have very little power outside the prison. Within the prison, they have a reputation as being extremely and disproportionately violent, but are usually outnumbered greatly by rival gangs.

Latin Kings have a huge presence both inside and outside the prisons, but in both situations, Latin Kings seem to kill each other more often than they kill other gang members. ALKN probably represent the 2nd or 3rd largest street gang in the US, but their worst enemy is themselves. They are split into innumerable factions that are constantly in opposition, and even within factions, members are regularly killed so that others may move up in rank, while others are killed for violating the ALKN manifesto.

I grew up in Gangster Disciple territory. GDs are definitely within the top 3 largest street gangs in the US and are likely #1. The thing with the largest gangs is that there will always be more infighting among them. In the south side of New Bedford alone there were/are four major territories, all run by different GD sets (Ruth Street, Monty's Park, Rivet Street, and South First) that were always either fighting each other or the larger GD set on the West side (United Front). There was very little fighting between the GD sets in the South and West sides and the ALKN sets in the North and NW parts of the city. It was mostly GDs against GDs and LKs against LKs.

Smaller gangs are often more dangerous and extreme in their violence because they have to be in order to establish themselves and maintain their power.

New Bedford has a surprisingly large population of Central American immigrants (mostly Guatemalans, El Salvadorans, and Hondurans), a large percentage of which are illegal (google "Bianco Factory Raids" for evidence). Despite their large numbers in the area, those who get involved in gang activity simply assimilate into the established gangs, despite clearly having the numbers to challenge the smaller neighborhood sets for their turf.

In the entire city there is one MS13 tag, it is tiny and was crossed out relatively quickly by Ruth Street. 18th Street, which is another LA Hispanic gang that recruits largely in Central American immigrants, has tag up in a few different spots in the same neighborhood, and not all of it has been crossed out yet. In the world of gangs, that holds a lot of significance.

Across the entire US, MS13 is estimated to be about 50,000 strong. ALKN has more than half that in Chicago alone, plus huge presence all over the eastern seaboard, Southern states, and Midwest. Various Disciple gangs total close to 50k in Chicago alone and likewise maintain a huge presence all over the eastern three quarters of the country.

And to Waylon, the History Channel and Discovery probably said "one of the largest" because they strongly avoid making definitive statements like "#1 largest", particularly regarding something as difficult to quantify like total gang population within a country. ALKQN is definitely one of the biggest in the country and easily within the top 5. They probably rank 2 or 3 overall, and GDN is most likely the largest, though it's not impossible that things are the other way around. Others in the top five would probably be Vice Lords, Crips, and 18th street. Bloods and P Stones also have a large, nationwide presence.
