what's the deal?....
i don't get it. i was just wondering and wanted to explore some stuff
and i asked a friend about some doom metal. he tells me Anathema,
and Cathedral, so i go on the internet and hear some of it, and it sounds
like iron maiden or helloween. is that what doom metal really is, because
i thought it would be more like....i don't know...uhhh....like songs like the
tales from the cypt theme, or melodic like the exorsist theme or halloween
theme(dark and scary evil like that). i want stuff like that, so does any one
know and bands, i don't know what the hell genra, but bands that sound
like that???

I got this from some site so Im not sure if it's acurate. I hope this helps answer your question.
Doom/Goth Metal
Profoundly downtuned, slow, depressive . . . Doom Metal may not have the ability to get your pulse racing, but it does have a lot of slothful charm, nevertheless. Torpor is the overriding characteristic of a wide range of sub-styles within Doom Metal, the main ones being : Classic Doom, Doom-Death, Stoner Doom and Sludgecore. Can be crushingly heavy. Classic Doom comes directly out of 1970's British band BLACK SABBATH, although all styles of Doom are influenced by The Sabs to some extent. This sub-genre favours clean, melodic, soaring vocals best illustrated by Messiah Marcolin of legendary Swedes CANDLEMASS. The guitar riffs are usually clearly recognisable and highly defined (not abstract). Melody is acceptable and lead breaks are in. Radical downtuning not essential.
Doom-Death is a highly enjoyable style - blending morbidly slow, richly downtuned, Classic Doom riffs with some blast beats and gruff Death Metal vocals - that can be traced to the north of England in the early 1990s. MY DYING BRIDE, PARADISE LOST (at "Shades of God") and ANATHEMA led this scene. Literate, Romantic and melancholic lyrics and grainy atmospheres are trademarks of this style.
Stoner Doom - best represented by smoked-up Californians KYUSS and SLEEP - is Doom that is not slow because it's down. . . it's struggling to get going because the players that make it have been smoking copious amounts of dope. This is Doom with a psychedelic haze blurring its edges. Permitted to groove. Dopey but delightful.
Sludgecore - aggressive and hard, yet still very slow, Doom with Hardcore influences. EYEHATEGOD, GRIEF and CROWBAR are good examples. *Courtesy of Nightshade Magazine

I love doom. That guy dose not know what doom is! Try Evoken, they have had people kill themselfs to there music. Ocotober Tide (my favorite doom band), Novembers doom, Paradise lost which is one of the first doom bands, my dying bride is good but the guys voice can get really annoying. Evoken is your best bet tho, best doom around, slow, depressing, deep, everything. If you cant find any private message me and ill send you some. Also, try "Halls of Amenti" by cephalic carnage. There not doom metal but they did a PHENOMINAL 19 minute doom song. I strongly suggest that

Here you will like these:
Katatonia - older stuff is more doom, get the CD "Brave Murder Day" you will love it
October Tide - Amazing, very melodic.. I would reccomend these guys for starters cause they are a lot easier to get into
November's Doom - I don't know anything about them really but they are very good also
Daylight Dies - also very Melodic and easier to get into.. Like a mix between Katatonia and Opeth, their cd "No Reply" is simply amazing! Go get it!
Grey Skies Fallen - Amazing.. very melodic, with awesome clean and screaming vocals.. progressive like Opeth too.. very good!
All these can be found on MP3.com .. go listen and enjoy!!
*** Also for a more sludgecore band i VERY HIGHLY reccomend ISIS!! They are sooo amazing!! Their newest cd "Oceanic" is one of the greatest cd's I've ever heard. I LOVE them!!

If Crowbar is considered sludgecore, I'll recommend them to anyone, they're fucking awesome.

in case of katatonia, i would recommend their debut album "dance of december souls" and "for funerals to come" and "sounds of decay" EP's as well. really dark, atmospheric, emotional, melodic.
about october tide - are their albums easy to find? but you should be able to get them with filesharing programs (like soulseek).
daylight dies resembles to katatonia and october tide in my opinion. definetly worthy to check out.
i would also recommend finnish group rapture (they have released two albums, "futile" and "songs of the withering" (if i remember that title correctly). also heavy, melodic and melancholic musid with good growls.
if you want to listen to gothic metal bands with doom influences, then i suggest older theatre of tragedy (especially "velvet darkness they fear"), tristania and the sins of thy beloved.
for information, what doom metal is, check http://www.doom-metal.com

thats not doom at all. hell, it sounds like folk metal at times. Then again, the lyrics are taken from a Finnish folk book, so what can you expect?
I got Katatonia's newest, it is ok. Sins of Thy Beloved have a kick ass second album, their first one sucks though.
Velvet Darkness..., by ToT is your best bet. Or Aegis, if you are looking for something more relaxing.
Tiamat is good too............

ELECTRIC WIZARD!!!!!!
From Cathedral Try their first album "Forest Of Equilibrium"
that's doom, after that they got more up tempo
Also one f the first doom bands Trouble
try "Psalm 9"(the only bad thing about them is their christian lyrics)
My Dying Bride:Anything except "34.788 Complete".I think
Their best is"The Light At The End Of The World"
Funny but many bands mentioned are gothic and not doom!
