Good guitar to buy my boyfriend?
Hi,
I've come here looking for some advice about what guitar to get my boyfriend for christmas. He loves metal, especially death metal and is the vocalist in a band called Sons of Slaughter. He played bass a bit before but said he'd like to learn guitar. With christmas coming up I thought it'd be cool to get him one as a present however there's a LOT of guitars out there and I'm not going to pretend I know anything about them!!
As he's a beginner (and as I'm poor - I've got him Metallica tickets for his birthday which is 10 days before christmas) I don't want to spend loads but I don't want to get him something crappy either as he'll be using it for a couple of years. I think £300 is my top limit but bearing in mind i'll need to get him an amp and some other stuff too, I'd prefer to spend a bit less.
I've looked at Ibanez, ESP, Dean and Schecter but as I say, there's a lot to choose from. Going by looks, Schecter is favorite so far, but hey, looks aren't everything!
If musical preference plays a part in what to get, here's some of the bands he likes:
Nile, Pantera, Dimmu Borgir, Opeth, Slayer, Megadeth, In Flames, Cannibal Corpse, Corrosion of Conformity...it goes on but i can't remember even some of them.
Anyway, if anyone would care to make some suggestions, id be forever grateful!!

I would take him to your local guitar store, tell him his limit, and let him pick.

He doesn't need anything special to start out with. I'm actually still on my starter, a hideous Squier strat that sucks for metal. Ibanez have some decent lower end models that are good for playing metal. Out of the brands you named, ESP is probably the best for metal, but I never like their lower end stuff. He can buy himself a brand new expensive ESP or Dean in two or three years once he's made good use of the guitar you buy him.

That really is the only way. Because even if the vendor says it's the best he has to offer, maybe your boyfraaan still doesn't like the colour or shape or whatever. Take him along with you.
Oh yeah, if OP doesn't post after this anymore, it's Sons of Slaughter-spam.

Thanks for the help guys. I think I'll do a little 'fishing' and try and see if I can get out of him what guitar(s) he likes, but I want it to be a surprise so I really don't want to tell him!
Cheers anyway!

Just go to a real big guitar centre. Nothing would suck more than a lack of choice in a situation like this.
Hey actually that's quite a cool username.

I always thought a Daisy Rock guitar would be pretty brutal on stage.

ESP is always good for a beginner, good price/quality.
But REALLY, you'll want to take him to a guitar store with you and make him choose. If you really hàve to surprise him, you can just blindfold him and drive him there. Or let someone drive you two there. Then BAM he sees a wall full of guitars. Now how SURPRIIIISE is that.

Ha, Soul has a point. This is quite unusual.

That looks like a great guitar for a beginner, one that would suffice perfectly well for a serious player.
Don't forget that you'll need to buy that amp in the bundle deal.

OK I've changed my mind again due to cash-flow and found this instead: http://www.thomann.de/gb/esp_ltd_mh_100qm_nt.htm
If he wants to get a better one in a year or so, he will! I'm just kick-starting him, lol.
I was gonna get a micro-cube amp - will that do for just kicking about the house?
Haha Soul - I hate buying presents that don't mean anything to the recipient and I'm not gonna get the £59.99 guitar 'starter pack' from Asda! I'll look ya up if anything happens to him - but not if it's 'suspicious circumstances'

After all, the aim is to have it in your hands, not a particular instrument.

Good call - I've yet to find one of those nicely packaged "starter packs" that's worth shit.
Yes, that also looks like a prize-worthy starting setup. Mind you, I'm a bit biased as I'm an ESP fanatic, and the LTD's are generally pretty good too.

Go with Schecter! Had mine nearly three years. Never goes out of tune. And the only time I thought it had a problem was when I suspected the truss rods were out of shape. Turns out I set the bridge at the wrong action after a string change. Touch wood. Schecter's introductory stuff (or even cheap) stuff tends to also have quality gear for the price too, especially for pickups (which are arguably the sole deciding factor in the suitability of a guitar for metal).
Hey! On a more unrelated, small-world note, I have your boyfriend's album. It was recommended to me by someone close to the father of the guitarist. Got it from Amazon.

Schecters are nice
I played one once and I wet myself a little bit.

Meh, Schecters may have their fine points, but ESP has the edge... now here is an off-topic discussion that could go on till the server memory is full.

I have yet to actually play a shec & an esp side by side. Shecs with lowered action make for an awesome feel, until you get past the 15th fret.

Nah, fixed that problem a while back. A couple months later, though, the springs that hold the bridge in place loosened so I jammed a sock in the back of my guitar to hold the bridge in place. Otherwise, the strings rest on the frets. Fuck that shit.

personally, i'd vote towards a low end ESP but the best thing to do would be to take him to a music store and let him see what he wants
oh, and it sounds like he's got quite an awesome girlfriend

OK First, check out your local music shop. You have a choice of steel or nylon strings, but you will know what he prefers. Find out what is available in your price range (even 2nd hand) and also what deal the shop will do - free gig bag or whatever. Explain the postion to them. Then, as near to Christmas as possible, take the boyfriend to the shop. Tell him what you propose to do and ask him to choose from the ones you have already checked out. Let him try them out and see which one is for him. I know it takes away the element of surprise, but it is the safest way. You can keep it at yours and give it to him on Christmas day or whenever. Hope this helps.
