Ear training man, it takes a lot of time and practice to be able to hear music correctly.sign up for some singing lessons at a Community college or something and check out some online programs. David B.'s relative pitch supercourse is pretty good, you can get a torrent for it online.

if you play an instrument, that would help alot

i taught myself how to sing in key by matching notes on guitar and piano

Hey guys. So who is this David Lucas Burge dude? I tried to download the torrent. Didn't work. Anybody know what the easiest way to download this dude would be? And how good is this course?

You live in Asheville? Get in a choir. They're great for learning and someone there might be able to tutor you a little.

Get away from your metalheadness for awhile and check out some church choirs. You'll learn breath support, tone and pitch, harmony, and some even have guitars and drums. The thing about utilizing a church choir is it's free. Not a cent. Or you could call some of them and see if you can find out if their directors give private lessons or can recommend someone to you. Generally you won't have to join or do anything other than the singing part. I learned a lot being in them. I want to go back someday.
I'm up in Ohio and the protestant church I go to has a casual service with a light rock band. You might luck out and have the classical as well as the contemporary styles.
