yeah i cant play quo vadis tightly at all and ive been playing for years. i guess that doesnt say much about me though

forget beginner or not, pick a song you like and want to know and learn it, if it is too hard for you to play, learn how to play that way, how else to get better then to challenge yourself

I just looked at the tabs from Quo Vadis "On The Shore of Ithaka" and "The Day The Universe Changed". "The Shore of..." has some hard rhythm parts in it, but "The Day ..." looks quite easy (without the solo of course) . It doesn't have any special techniques, complicated rhythms or fast sections. The only uncommen thing ist, that they are not only using the standard power chords but alternations from it as well (but you should learn other ways to play a power chord anyway). And there is one riff, where the correct tempo might be hard to figure out, but it should be possible, if you listen to the song a couple of times. So i guess the song may be a good start for you - nothing very difficult, but still challenging if you are a complete beginner.

Thanks for all the helpful input but I started thinking about what Nemesis said and then what my friend told me. I'm an absolute novice at guitar. Alternate picking is even killing me. Maybe I should learn some techniques and the names of them before I even try to tackle a song. Is there any online guitar courses or can someone write me a small compilation of core techniques and jargon.

There are also some good books, and they are probably not too expensive. Just to mention two:
Troy Stetina - Heavy Metal Rhythm Guitar I & II / Heavy Metal Lead Guitar I & II
Peter Fischer - Rock Guitar Secrets
Especially the second one contains probably everything you need to know and enough practising ideas for some years...
As for websites, I'd also recommend http://www.cyberfret.com/
And I came I across http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ lately - it looks nice, but I haven't checked it out yet, so I can't tell

I find it important, to always have a good mixture of both - playing songs and learning new stuff/doing finger exercises/... Doing only one might lead to either no progress or no fun. There are also quite easy metal songs - for example: you might learn power chords and then practise them playing the rhythm parts of paranoid, learn palm muting and practise it with the verse riff from enter sandman,...
