6-string to '7-string'
I have a spare 6-string and i've heard that it's possible to make it into almost a seven string. By that, i mean u do some shit to the bridge and put fat arse strings on it and then tune it to B. Can someone give me some details on how to do this the best.
What do i have to do to the bridge/tension springs?
Is it safe to put the 6 thickest strings from a 7-string set onto the customised 6-string?
Is there anything else to help retain tension at such a low tuning?
Are there any pick ups that help sound quality and sustain in low tunings?

i wouldnt recommend putting 7string strings (or tuning to B) on a six string, unless youre so blessed as to have a les paul or an expensive guitar with lots of reinforcement. if not, you might fuck up your neck and intenation (talking from personal experience) my advice would be to buy an actual 7string, like an ibanez or an esp.

i mean, i already tune it to B and its ok

Or Di Marzio Blaze 7, those are pretty good too. I also tune to a B, and use 7-string sets, I just don't use the high E string. 10-56 work fine to eliminate the flop of the strings.

If you mean nu-metal, then it's the music itself that is gay, not the guitar(s) it's played on. Have you ever heard Cannibal Corpse?

i dont see why its "gay" to buy a 7string guitar [bitch!]. i think its justifiable in owning one just so you can get the low tunes without having to fuck with your intenation and spring tension like a 6string. (i'd also hate to have to try and deal with a floyd rose trem...eww!) shit i just stick a 12-60 set of strings on mine and im good, no adjustments needed.

I downtune my gibson and it's fine.. but I REALLY wouldn't recommend doing it for a long period of time on a crap 6 string.. it'll ruin it. I don't care if it's fine now or in a week.. it does damage to the guitar it's a proven point. And nu metal isn't the only type of music to use a 7 string.. I know of alot of bands that use a 7 string that aren't nu-metal.. Just because a certain band uses a certain product.. or pedal.. or guitar doens't make the product or gear itself crap.. and to whoever thinks this way I hope you get fucking run over by a big fucking truck... die ... die... die... for example john petrucci of dream theatre and joe satriani. there definitrly not nu-metal. i'd use a 7 string for the extra notes, but i find the neck is too wide for me

Yeah same here.. I think the neck is a tad to wide for my liking.. i'm sure I could get used to it with some time. But I think i'll just stick with my 6 string guitars..

you guys keep sayin how tunin to B on ur 6 string for long periods of time will fuck it up... i only recently decided to keep one of my guitars tuned to C all the time... will that fuck it up? and 7 strings aren't just for nu metal.... cannibal corpse uses them, macabre uses them, i think carcass did, malignancy, mortician, exhumed, and morbid angel all use them and they sure as hell aren't gay nu metal

On a cheap ass 6 string.. if you downtune you have to use a bigger gauge string..and when you put that much pressure on the neck it will warp the hell out of it .. yes it will damage the guitar.. more expensive guitars don't have such a problem.. You just adjust the truss rod and you're fine.. you have to compensate for all the pressure on the neck and adjust the truss rod so the neck is straight again..

7 strings aren't gay, it's the way you use them, bands like unearth use them well and it's not nu-metal or anything in that direction, it depends on the person that's using them.

Well did you adjust the truss rod to make the neck straight again? And from what I hear BC Rich uses cheap ass wood but pretty hot pickups. That's what your paying for the shape and the pickups and they use crap wood for the components? Everyone that i've talked to about BC Rich told me not to go with a BC Rich unless I wanted to fork out the money for a custom one. There is a BIG metal rod that goes through your neck and it's udjustable for a reason. If you keep the neck bowed it's going to want to stay that way. and that is when it's warped. So if you don't care then don't mess with the truss rod. If you want your guitar to last and not go out of tune constantly because your neck is a fishing pole then just adjust it that way. I NEVER have my Gibson in standard tuning. So I have the rod adjust to the point that when i'm in C it's perfect.. If I do go to standard tuning the neck is bowed a tad. but I never use standard so why do I care?

i agree with Ivan...7 string bring more to the music not take away. its how its used that makes it worth while...Korn (although nu metal) makes some awsome music with a 7 stringer...and sometimes a 12...

when tuning down, string tension must be near eqaul to the tension of the strings as it came standard if ya wanna tune down with cheap shit guitars.
i have a really cheap yamaha strat copy that iv had at C for a year now and its still perfectly playable with the intonation near perfect and no sign of any damage.
all i use is a 52 string for the C which is near in tension to a 42 at E and so on.
so if the guitar is set up correctly to begin with, there should be no damage whatsoever.
