Painting guitars
Any of you guys ever tried painting your guitar? I was wondering what kind of paint to use. The only thing i've ever really painted is a car and I know auto paint is probably not the thing to use. Any info would be helpful

It's probably not a good idea to do it yourself, I know somebody who tried to paint his bass black and it ended out bad (thank god for inventing stickers)
you'll probably need a good, good coating and a lot of 'blanke lak' ehm, the see thru finished that protects your paint.
you'll need a lot of layers of that stuff...

I'm actually really good at painting. But I can understand why it wouldn't turn out that great.. But i'm sure it's not that different from a car alot of sanding painting sanding. I just can't find like.. "guitar paint" anywhere. I don't know what brands there are or anything.. you know what I mean? I figured you'd know Def, oh yeah and I haven't been online the past few days since I'm in Wisconsin. I looked for you online after I posted this and didn't see ya.. I leave for 15 minutes and come back and you've already been here and gone haha.. anyways.. Thanks man

haha, so what's up man?
I don't know shit about special 'guitar paint' but there probably is paint for guitars, how else can the custom shops paint those cool guitars?
maybe the paintbrush paint is the right stuff, but do use a good blank layer on top to keep the whole guitar shining.
well, the sanding part, I don't know, maybe you need to do it by hand and piece by piece, really carefully, then get a good primer to make the paint hold really good.
damn it's hard for me to talk about painting stuff cuz all the words are diffrent in english, hehe, so this probably doesn't make any sense hehehe
oh, Downset was great, we did an interview with them for a mag, pretty neat (they where zipping waterpipes and shit in the tourbus!) the show was good, but they where wasted, still, they played a lot of the old stuff... great shit.
which guitar are you gonna paint? not the gothic, or else I'll personally shoot you for that

haha.. That sounds like Downset.. heh.. And the vader/immolation show was incredible.. I posted about it in tours/shows forum.. And no haha i'm not going to paint the gothic. I'm going to paint the strat copy. And I did find a place that sells the top coat and shit for guitars but zero colors.. but it did say that Fender uses PPG paint and PPG makes car paint.. So i'll just have to find out if PPG makes a different kind of paint for guitars or what have you.

i painted one of my guitars....first i used 60 grit sandpaper and sanded the paint off...then used 120 grit sandpaper to make the guitar more smoth, then i used 260 grit to make the guitar perfect...then i covered up all of the parts i didnt want painted with this huge masking tape stuff, then i used an airbrush to paint the body. Before i painted it i put primer on first so the paint would last...I held the airbrush far from the body and put really really really light coats on....i think i did 5 or 6 coats. The guitar i did it on was a fairly shitty Hondo H-77 and i sold it...but the paint job was better then the original

ive painted 2 guitars both of which came out very good and used spray paint. just sand it down to wood then prime the shit out of it wet sand, prime again sand, etc for 3 times then paint it nice nice then clear and you should be good. theres a little more the that to it if your a reall fussy ass you can get car body filler and fill in all bumps from sanding and make its really smooth.

Ive painted many guitars with just spray paint.. not hard. http://home.flash.net/~guitars/
Just make sure you strip the previous finish down real good. And I believe your talking about Laquer/Polyurathane.. ect

Use Heavy Duty spray paint if you dont have an airbrush, Auto Paints are nice.. and I've had good luck with Rustoleum.
Just read that link I have you.. and wet sand... ALOT

Hell yes. That Rustoleum professional heavy duty enamal is good stuff. I just finished making a diamond plate pickguard for my Explorer and used that to paint it black. It turned out fucking incredible. Much tougher finish than I thought it would be.
