I can't remember the comedian's name for the life of me, but I got it from his Comedy Central Presents. The bit was something like "I told my dad that joke and he laughed so hard he shat a decorated christmas tree." I swear I laughed for 5 minutes afterwords.

Louis C.K. is great.
I did some research, the comedian is Todd Glass.

Arch Enemy is great live. I saw them years ago with Hatebeed and Slayer in philly at the electric factory. I was prob 14 or 15 at the time. Damn, time flies by. That was still the best show I was ever at. Slayer played the entire Reign in Blood album as an encore.

Does anyone else here listen to old Silverchair? I dug out their first two CD's; Frogstomp and Freak show, I hadn't listened to those in ages, and I forgot just how great those ones were. Can anyone recommend some other bands that have a similar sound to Silverchair? Especially Frogstomp... that one was their only true grunge album in my opinion.

Yeah I saw that tour... they had like an hour timeslot, but instead they did a 45-minute set with plenty of Hell Awaits material and other old shit, THEN proceeded to play the entire Reign in Blood album I NEVER though I would see Reborn or Epidemic played live... I was seriously in ecstasy at the time.

I love Diorama.
FUCK anyone who hates on that, open up your fucking ears. Anyway, I love that album. Too bad Daniel Johns is a chain smoking alcoholic now, but I guess he stopped smoking weed. He definitely had some harsh times, though.
Anyone heard Young Modern? Goddamn that made me cry...
BTW: Into the flood again...

I'm selling the following (only posting here since the classifieds is so cluttered). I live in the Ithaca area/central new york region, so I'd appreciate local pickup.
Peavey 5150(pre-6505 era) 120watt Head & Cabinet - $1200 for both.
some rack stuff and some older drum microphones - message for list
my peavey triple xxx head - $650

I just heard a fox barking right outside my window, and I can smell it. Must have gotten in a fight with another animal.

It took me 3 times to work up the threshold to "Watch it." More like turn my head away and listen to the dumb bitch rant about her stupid, pointless, worthless, fashion scene composed of trendy ignorant children.

Today's probably the last day i'll post for the next month. I'm going to South America tomorrow to wreak havoc that only a member of the US Marines can do.
Going to Peru, Ecuador, Chile and maybe more. I'll be gone for i think 28 days starting tomorrow.

Watch out for the fucking spiders!
Are you stopping in Venezuela? I've been there once when I was younger. It was pretty cool, minus the arachnids.

Had to dodge a few poisonous spiders while i was in australia last year.

MT is slowly (but at least only temporarily) losing all it's military members. Graf, now TM, then me in July, and there's a few others too whose names slip my mind, i think. Isn't Philkilla away in the military too?

It's amazing how big the U.S. military is by the way, it's fucking insane. Some European countries don't even have an army! Okay, so they don't need it... true.
I saw some docu about U.S. Army recruiters and their tactics, pretty weird to see that shit happening. I mean, it's obviously a very big employer in the U.S., I can't seem to grasp how huge the organization is. And as a organizational strategic expert I wonder how their organizational structure and strategic topmanagement works.
Any one of you army boys have some good sources/stories on that subject?

In my personal opinion the military isn't that big. It gets a tiny percentage of the annual budget comparitively to a good number of other countries.
The United States by population is what the 3rd largest country? If not its number 4. Obviously China and India being 1 and 2. Makes good sense the US should have a large military.
Yeah Soul is former navy, Xgraf is now in Navy Officer Candidate school, Philla was in the Army but now is training to go back in again, and I'm in the Marine Corps.
Not sure what kinda stories you're looking for. I will have more i'm sure when i return from Iraq in 2010. Hell probably not based on what i'll be doing. Probably alot of it i won't be able to talk about, but they won't be stories rather just information.
I have a friend who is friend in Iraq was showing weapons handling of a Glock to Iraqi police officers a few years back. He ended up shooting himself through the chin, where the bullet bounced around and came out his forehead. He now is missing a few teeth, can't hear out of one ear, and can no longer smell. Hes just as dumb as when he was in though hah. Hes out now doing some sort of security job making big bucks up in DC.
What kind of info would you like to know? Stories, policies, military life?

If I'm not mistaken, we have the biggest military (not in terms of people - but resources, jets, tanks, etc) and the largest military budget in the world.

Yes. Thats not what i said. I said by percentage of budget. It makes solid sense if you think about it in terms of amount of money the US makes and the large number of people, it would seem only fitting to have the largest military. If we used the kind of percentages that other countries did we would be astronomically larger.
I'm all about reduction in military when need be. Once the whole "Iraq" thing cools down the military will be back to the way it used to be. Smaller and a hell of a lot more strict. In the Marine Corps during the 80s and 90s, one NJP and you were booted out no questions asked. Its not like that anymore, which it shouldn't be at the moment anyways.
They're always trying to scale back military spending and if the Air Force and the Navy wouldn't wastefully spend it like they do we would get more of the bang for the buck. Those two services alone piss me off the most over that. They do the least amount of actual work and get the largest budget. Bullshit is what i call it.

I don't know why there should be a correlation between the population count and the size of a country's military force?
With the most modern warfare techniques in the world I'de say it's more of a quality vs. quantity issue as well.
The info I'm looking for is how the organization of the u.s. military is designed. I mean it's a huge organization, who decides on strategy? What staff departments are crucial, etc. Is there a seperate strategic top for each part (navy, airforce, army, etc.) of the military?
I know that here in The Netherlands that the Defence Minister just directs the militairy and gives them a budget etc. There is one head of armed forces; a high ranking general that comes from the navy, airforce or army and they rotate so it's not always the same part that gets represented.
Under him there's a sort of 'Generals meeting' with all military parts that the head of armed forces directs. Strategic plans that these generals bring to the table are made up by their staff. (HR, finance, etc.)

Concerning the whole population and military size correlation, it seems that it would make sense though. I mean wouldn't you think that with more people in your country, you're going to have more people who want to serve in the military. And you have more people paying taxes, which means more money to the government, and in turn more money toward the development of a strong military. And maybe i'm wrong on this, but the more people you have working for it, the more you have developing new ideas, tactics, technology, etc. and thus improving the overall quality. If you cut out half of our military, then i would think it would take a lot longer to develop those things. So while quantity doesn't necessarily mean quality, and quality doesn't directly reflect on quantity, if you do have an efficient military system then a greater quantity of people will speed up the process of improving quality. Does that make sense at all? I'm having a hard time finding the right words to really convey my theory but i think i got the idea across.
As for how the military is structured and how the whole process works, i think i have a good understanding of it, but I'd rather Tm or someone who has had more experience in it answer that. I'm just getting to boot camp on July 1st, so I have yet to actually experience it first hand, and I'd rather not try to answer something i'm not totally sure of and make an ass of myself in the process haha

More or less the same kind of thing. The president is followed by the Secretary of Defense which is followed by the Joint Chief of Staffs. They handle the upper upper upper level military stuff. Budget and all that is handled at the pentagon.
Each branch has their own like "upper leader" who sets new policies and more or less just acts as a head to the joint chief of staff. For the Marine Corps its the Commendant. They handle issues that deal with the Marine Corps as a whole and he issues orders where the various command and base generals then enforce.
There is also the various Commands. North Command, South Com, Cent Com, Pa Com and so on. These handle the issues devoted towards their region. The commander in charge of each of the commands is the highest commander in the area. For example whoever goes to Iraq and heads whatever Marine Corps division that is there at the time the Centeral Command Commander (could be any branch) is head of that general and all the other generals in the command area of operations. These various command commanders are advised by the Joint Chief of Staff.
The way the military is structured may seem complicated but its not so much. Always remember that there is always somebody over the top of somebody else all the way up to the President. There is a set in stone chain of command all the way to the privates down at the bottom. And the privates know their chain of command. (At least in the marine corps they do)
I'm probably one of the better ones to talk to about strategic level stuff as most members of the military know much more about tactical stuff rather than upper level. Because where i'm located (washington dc) you pretty much stay in the more zoomed out picture. I've always kind of liked it but others don't.
I work at the head of Marine Corps Intelligence, and if anything i can spend much more time talking about intelligence agencies, how they connect what they do and so on rather than the organization and structure of the various branches.
Truth: You pretty much summed it up. I mean logic dictates that, yes even though there is more emphasis on quality rather than quantity, you still need boots on the ground to have an effective military. You can throw your dollars into high technology and progressing technology all that you want but what are you going to get out of it? Example is the Air Force and the Navy which pretty much haven't done anything but progress the "future war." The F-22 is an example of that. Most expensive useless plane in existance right now. The Marine Corps gets something like 2% of the Navy budget yet they do nearly all the fighting and have made almost all the gains in both Iraq and Afganistan. Something is fucked up there if you ask me. I'm not knocking the Army but they have a totally different mission and i don't even want to get into that can of worms.
Regarding technology aircraft can't secure or take over, or hold anything. If the war on terror has proved anything technology isn't winning the ground war. Technology is saving lives but its the getting out there interacting and dealing with people that is effectively fighting this war.

I don't know, it just feels weird for a country that's real big but has a limited population should have a small military.
Example: Australia has like 20 million people in it.
The Netherlands has about 17 million people in it.
Catch my drift? Australia would be harder to defend with a military that's about the same size as ours. And ofcourse a population number doesn't mean that everyone in it is able to fight/joing the millitary! Maybe half of the Chinese population is blind or retarded, or both!!
More taxes doesn't mean more income for the millitary either, or at least, not over here. The defence budget is not tied to the tax rates.
I get your idea about quantity and quality but I don't share the same point of view, an efficient military system is what we all want. But an efficient military system means (like most efficient business systems) : it's lean and mean. That doesn't correlate with the size (in numbers) of the military.
On the other hand, if a greater number of tax payers equals more budget for the military, then yes, efficiency could be reached more easily if you have more tax payers and the money is spent effectively AND efficiently. Still, this does not reflect on the size of the military in numbers.
I'm not a military expert but I find this quite an interesting subject, thanks for sharing your point of view on it. And good luck at boot camp!

|
Very informative post! Thanks a bunch! I'm getting my ass in bed now so I'll re-read tomorrow. I'de like to know more about how the general commands and the regional command stand in relation to each other and in the hierachy? (is there something like an organizational chart for the whole US military?)
Funny thing that I just mentioned in my last post before I saw yours, when the money is effectively and efficiently spent you'll get an effective military system. By the looks of it, that's not always the case: it's nice to see examples that come from first-hand experience.

I have definitely taken notice of this. The majority of the technology that i've seen in development is mainly for recon. While yeah, it's great to have and will save soldiers lives, it still isn't fighting the battle for us. You still have to go in there and physically get the job done, no matter how many robotic cameras you send it before you. Especially in this war, where it's not like we can just send in missiles and drop bombs blindly everywhere. So, the bottom line being that no matter how much technology we come up with, nothing will replace actual physical manpower.. at least not in this war.

You definitely have some interesting points to take into consideration. Here's something to think about.. If you're comparing the military to an efficient business system, then yeah 'mean and lean' would work, but one thing your forgetting is that the most powerful businesses in the world are Big Business, like tobacco companies, oil companies, etc. and the reason for them being so powerful is because they are efficient AND big, not just one or the other. So one would think that if a military system was to be powerful, it would have to have both the efficiency and the size.
In your country, what effects the military's budget? I'm really not sure how other countries are run, let alone my own sometimes.
You said that budget does not affect the size in numbers, but I have to disagree. If the military has more money, then they could employ more soldiers. I guess you could put the money toward developing more technology, but you need people to do that too, so no matter where the money goes, I would think that it would result in a size increase in some way.
Thanks for the luck dude, I'll be sure update you guys on my experience after it's all over once i get the chance. I'm goin to have to go a whole 6 weeks without the infamous green screen, it's goin to be rough haha! i've been on here pretty consistently for the past 3 years, despite what my post count may reflect. I'd love to know how much time i've accumulated being here on MT. What a waste!!! haha, i love this place though.

Btw i'm very passed bootcamp haha. Thats Xgraf. I've been in the Marine Corps for 3.5 years now.
Def: I most definitely agree with your lean and mean statement. Thats the problem i think with the other branches. Since they have such a big budget there is so much wasteful spending. Needless to say the Marine Corps is the most thrifty fucking spender ever.
Go ahead and believe this, the Marine Corps is the most military branch in the entire world. It lives breathes and sleeps combat readiness. We get the tiniest budget and make the shit work every single time. Just part of the game. Hence why marines get shit bonuses, you can't get the marine corps to pay for your college except in like special cases and so on. So many other apparently easy benefits outside of the same ones they all have. It angers me and at times make me think i maybe should have went navy, but its an experience like none other.
Maybe they should highly drop the military spending so maybe the other branches can use the money more wisely. Sad story is if they cut budget we'll be the ones effected

Looks cool. It also looks like its free, yes? If it is then I might try it out, but I'm weary of the quality of "free" games.
EDIT: Never mind. Reviews look pretty bad and the game looks bland.

Fuck off with your ignorance you goddamn toss pot. You don't even know if that's completely true... where I live, tons of emo's get hassled, all the fucking time. I see it quite often too, so don't go generalizing a whole country like that man, because it might be true in some parts, but not everywhere.

see we might drink shitty beer here, but we can get it for $10 a 24 pack. Sometimes quantity over quality, my friend. After you get a solid buzz goin, it all goes down like water anyway.

Eh, I'll have to disagree. The American Craft Beer scene is much more elaborate and more established than here in Canada. Right now there are definitely one of the best countries in the world for good beer.
