A few friends of mine formed a hardcore band a little while ago, and they've been in need of a 2nd guitarist, so I figured i'd help out. Just started practicing with them a few days ago and got 4 songs down. Got a show tonight. Should be fun. I'm not really into hardcore, but it'll be fun just to be up on stage playing music, even if it is just simple powerchord driven shit. Although, on the bright side, we're opening up with the intro for Jesus Saves, so at least we got some metal influence in there. I can't wait til i start writing songs for them, they dunno what they're in for haha

They're decent musicians and songwriting is okay-ish.. their songs are just not realy doing anything for me. Doesn't invoke anything.

Power metal is okay if you don't take metal too seriously, as you should.

I think there is metal worth taking at least fairly "seriously."

Most of the bands I listen to i tend to. Melodic death, and some thrash bands. Alot of melo death bands touch on some abstract internal topics that i think are pretty good. Even black dahlia murder now and again, even though they have much darker gruesome lyrics than i would normally accept. I think the way they go about it makes it more sensible to take their lyrics more seriously than say your *insert gore death metal band here.*

But power metal? No pretty much on the same lines of, nearly all european metal and death metal. Pretty hard to take dragons, vikings, womb fucking and trolls seriously.

tmfreak: Then I don't see why you don't think Iced Earth can't be power metal. Unless you take stormriders, Spawn, zombies, wolfmen etc, very seriously, in which case I wonder what you consider 'abstract internal concepts.' In any case, Iced Earth is American power metal; of course it's not exactly the same as bands from Germany. But some being - I'll be kind and say 'influenced' by Metallica doesn't save them from being members of a gay genre. No worries, though, since the genre seems to be descended from Iron Maiden, and they kick ass.

As for whether or not you should take metal seriously: most metal bands have a fairly shallow grasp on the 'serious' topics they tackle lyrically, and you'd probably be better off going elsewhere on that count. With a few exceptions. As music it can be taken somewhat seriously, but, again, if you want to get really in depth you'd be better off going elsewhere. Which isn't to say that it doesn't have its uses. But remember that its primary use is to make dong-bearers of all ages stand together and bang their head whenever you want to get humorlessly 'serious' (i.e. pretentious) about it.

I think you're wrong in alot of aspects of how i take music. I mean can you give an example of music that often interweves anger, often philosophical and darker concepts that is constructed generally with higher energy that is better than what i'm describing?

Regardless of whether a band in your opinion attempts to "tackle" these topics does it really make a difference in the end? I interpret the music in my own sort of way, so regardless over whether they completely get the essence of whatever the subject is it doesn't really matter. Usually the subjects of the songs end up being something completely different than how i look at it, and thats fine, because i'd rather make it more of a personal experience than THEIR experience. Thats why i write music, so i can do that.

Also I already know your feelings on Iced Earth and i don't take the majority of their songs serious. If thats how you understood my post then you have been mistaken. I don't like significant portions of what their music is about, but there are definitely songs they have made that have made up for that. Example is nearly the entire Glorious burden cd, Ghost of freedom and a few others.

In general Iced Earth has a much more original style than the run of the mill power metal bands, which bank off of easy standard riffs and powerchords with lots of diatonic third harmonies. Do most metal bands have these elements in there at one point in time? Sure, but not all the time.
