advice on gallop picking

my galloping triplets are coming along nicely, and I'm able to play them with a fair amount of speed, but i know i have room for improvement.

i was testing it out today, trying to do more economical version. an "alternate galloping techinque" which would be:

DUD UDU DUD UDU repeated

which is different from the "traditional" galloping technique of:

DUD DUD DUD DUD repeated

do any of you guys use that "alternating method?" It seemed a bit more economical to me, so should I put some effort into training myself in this way?

i use the economical method (DUD UDU DUD UDU repeated) i hadnt even realised there was 2 ways to do it and thats just what felt more natural to me when i started doing it. its worth learning and i figure your wrist would take longer to get tired.

i used to do that method but found out it sucked for me. i used to end up playing in a certain rhythm (like when the gallops start in the trooper) i couldnt just do three precise picks,

IMO its better for technique to use DUD DUD DUD just because of accuracy.
(for me anyway)

I started with the DUD UDU DUD UDU variant but it actually held me back so now I play DUD DUD DUD DUD. It´s hard to get an aggressive sound while playing DUD UDU beacuse of the lower force being used

DUD DUD is the most natural and efficient way of playing the "gallop" rhythm (which isn't comprised of triplets, as discussed to death elsewhere in this forum). The missed upstroke facilitates the necessary rest that generates the rhythm.

You can play fast 16ths DDU? Hats off to you, but it sounds pretty uneconomical to me!

I've always played DUD DUD DUD.

I was waiting for someone to say that.

Are we talking about the same rythm? When you say gallop, you mean a eight note and then two sixteenth notes? It would be most natural to pick that rythm DDU, I think...

No. A "gallop" is 3 notes followed by a rest, with the individual notes and the rest all of equal duration.

yup, which basicly means it's just in average fourth divisable notes rather then third divisable ones.

They don't nessecary need to be 16ths. They could be 4ths, 8ths, 16ths, 32ths, 64ths, or even 128ths

The only important thing is that all the notes + rest are equal.

Well yes of course, but you'll usually come across them as 16ths. 128ths would sound like a millipede galloping and is unlikely to be realistically found unless the tempo is about 40bpm...

For me its all about isolation. Once you isolate the wrist and get the alternate picking down, you'll do fine.
