It all depends on the venue, its design, the sound system, and your band mates' equipment.
You actually don't need to worry about it though if there is a sound guy because he'll (if he's decent) level everyone out to sound good for the venue. If you think it might help (which it can), tell the sound guy that you're a metal band and want a more ear-bleeding volume.
Ideally though, if you're a band that needs certain things a certain way its not a bad idea to get your own sound guy to follow you around on shows to help you achieve exactly what you want.
