Changing Ampeg Vh140c (combo) speaker ?s

Is it as simple as i think it is? Just a matter of unplugging the current speakers from the Chorus and Dry inputs, unscrewing the speakers and then installing the new ones? Also, do speakers make a lot of tone difference because the ones that are in there now are geared towards country or classic rock I believe and I don't want to spend a lot of money if it's not that important. Lastly, I was thinking of putting in these speakers http://www.musiciansfriend.com/prod...aker?sku=660222
would they A) work and B) give me a brutal old-school sound?

the speakers do make quite a bit of difference, so theyre never a waste of time to experiment with.

I'm guna be honest, im not a huge speaker expert, but i do have a marshall cab with g12t-75's, and theyre kinda lower-mid scooped and have a really fizzy high end.My amp does not do brutal with these speakers and i definately have a dislike for their fizz. My other cab is a mesa stadard with v30's and it sounds MUCH heavier and much more evil. It was so heavy that i had to dial out alot of the bass and increase my treble and presence.

with marshall cab my settings were:
bass 7-9, mids 10, highs 4, presence 4

with mesa cab:
bass 4-6, mids 10, highs 6, presence 6.

I definitely like the sound of the V30s. It says it is geared more towards a 4X12 does it matter really that i have a 2X12?

not at all. I actually find v30's really ddark and think they'd be great in a 2x12

i got 2 of these guys to go with my ss140c ... in a 2x12
eminence legend v12
120 watt / 16 ohm
they sound really good but i don't own v30's so i can't compare.

what was the stock in your combo?

whats the deal with power ratings ex the v30 is rated @ 60w right? the ampeg puts out 75 per side ... so would that blow them?

I don't know what came stock, but the guy i bought it off had 'custom designed' Ampeg speakers that I think are geared towards country/classic rock or something. I have no idea what they originally come with.

The VH140c combos came with Ampeg's own generic designed V30-ish speakers.

What you want are the Celestion G12-80s. They're pretty much like the v30's but they have a higher power rating (80 watts.)

G12T-75 Greenbacks are definitely not an ideal match for a VH140c.

I have Eminence Legends in my Vader cab and those tear ass too, they're pretty much like the V30s.

i have v30s in my cab, 2X12, pretty awesome sounding. You need to warm them up though, in the sense of letting them run for a long period of time. If you can get a hold of them, look for Hellatone 60s, the suspension of them was exercised for 15 hours or something around those lines, so they already have a brutal tone. And with that amp, you can get really decent tones i'd guess.
Also look at eminence manowars, cannabis rex, texas heat, and red fangs. But it's kind of hard to get to know the different sounds of speakers, especially the same brand. You usually end up just taking people's words for it.

Right now I'm looking at these two:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/prod...aker?sku=660068
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/prod...aker?sku=660256

Where can I find how long it takes for the 'warming up?' Also, I need the 8ohm correct?

i can vouge for the manowars, i used to own a 4X12 with 2 celestion G12k and 2 manowars, great sound, but at that time, i didn't need that much volume.

There are a few ways to break in the speakers listed here
If you want, you can put both speakers in, that'd be pretty badass

As in, put both a Celestion and an Eminence in? How will that effect the tone?

And thanks for the link to that thread.

8 ohms is fine, in fact, those are fine at 4 ohms a side. I believe the amp is rated safe down to 2 ohms a side. Whatever ohmage you get the speakers in depends on how many watts you want. Each poweramp is rated for 70w @ 8 ohms a side or 90w @ 4 ohms per side... so two 4 ohm speakers would be 180 watts total.

Think I will stick with the 8ohm I don't really need 180 watts.

It will sound like there is 2 different types of speakers in it. It will be a mix between the two sounds of speakers, not sure how noticeable it will be between those brands, but you could give it a shot.

I'll probably just get the Eminence since it's about 40 bucks cheaper.

EDIT: x2 Eminence =$160
x2 Celestion =$260 So, yea definitely the Eminence.
