Hey, do bass solos exist?
Hey, besides MetallicA with their Cliff Burton times, does any band ever have bass solos?

Yes they do exist outside of metallica, they exist more in jazz/funk music, where the bass is seen as more of a melodic instrument, check the bass video's thread at the top of the bass forum (its stickied so you cant really miss it!) for a few very nice bass solo's from a few of the bass 'pros'.

A certain Bill Banwell does some of the better bass solos I've heard.

in the song Black Fire by Sabbat from Japan, theres a bass solo similar to a guitar solo in the beginning somewhere, if only it were more audible. and on Suffocation by Morbid Angel, hitting around 2:07, theres a small bass solo/interlude.

Yea, there might be more solos by him, I haven't heard any though (but I still have to listen to all Sadus except Elements of Anger).
Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big) is pretty impressive too, but i don't know if he has any real solos or just tons of fills and complicated basslines. And it's not really metal either.

they don't exist. cliff burton is a computer program created by the government...specifically, he's a composite of several bass players melded together as one superb bassist.

Billy Sheehan used to solo like a maniac in his Talas days...don't know if anyone under 35 remembers that band though They had a live album - "Live Speed On Ice" or something like that with a full-tilt Sheehan solo on it if I recall correctly - it's been ages since I heard that!

The guy in Exhumed does quite a few. They are very fuzzy though, and usually hard to hear.
Just look up Steve DiGiorgio though (Testament/Death).
...and yes, I did spell his name right.

Fast-forward Blades of Contingency to 2:57 and appreciate the cadenza musings of a then-14-year-old bass genius.
And too right about time Mike from Origin got recognition. That guy was out of this world when they visited Glasgow a few years back. Punctuated the vocalist's between-song quips with quality.
The guy from Aghora does some good bass-led instrumentals.

Like the tone of it (0 mids?), but it's a bit too low in the mix.

I am not sure how the guy set it, but it did sound good. And it was quite low. For some reason, the final track came out real quiet.

Brain Drill has a bass solo in a lot of their songs. I'm not really a fan of the band, but Jeff Hughell is a fuckin intense bassist. Also, maybe not many bass solos, but the bass in these bands are pretty prominent to the point where it is the reason I recently picked up bass (I've been playing guitar for a long time now): Atheist, Augury, Obscura, Behold...the Arctopus, Blotted Science, Spastic Ink, Necrophagist, Gordian Knot, Spiral Architect, Gorguts, ect. I don't really even listen to music that doesn't have highly audible technical bass lines anymore.
