Breaking in Speakers.

Just thought id share a little bit on this topic in case some people weren't familiar with the concept. Some of this info is on the Celestion website, but I figured id share how I do it. For those that complain of "buzzy" or "harsh" tones, this could definitely be of benefit to you, and it costs nothing!

I was doing this to one of my Orange 2x12's today. Simply take your cabinet and place it face down on the ground (this is not recommended for those living in apartments) and hook it up to our head/combo. I recommend you "warm up" the speakers a little bit first by playing at low to moderate volume levels for a bit before you do this. Now switch to whatever your clean or cleanest channel might be and crank that shit as high as is safe for your cab, dime the bass and the mids and cut some of the treble. Now switch to either your neck pickup or your middle position and strum some big open chords and throw in some inverted power chords (fifth in the bass) to really get those speakers moving. Now odds are whatever structure you are currently in will be vibrating pretty good at this point so make sure no one is around or whoever is around is understanding. Do this for about 10-15 minutes, take a break, and go back and do it again.

This will get the cone and suspension of the speakers nice and loosened up which will allow the speakers to flex a little more freely giving you a bit of added bass response and relax the high end and high midrange a bit. I really like this for Vintage 30's.

Some people also like to hook up a stereo to their cab and blast it all day while they are at work or school. This is cool as well but make sure if you do that it is bass or lower mid heavy music. This is what gets the speakers moving, your favorite treble heavy black metal album wont do nearly as much good here as a good ole' Drum N' Bass album would.

It would help a bit. I've heard the 75's sound pretty good, and they definitely sound better as they get older/more broken in. Although since they are a higher wattage speaker it will take more wattage to start loosening them up. If you are going to go the V30 route, I would recommend mixing them with the 75's first to see how you like it. 75's are scooped whereas V30's are almost exactly the opposite which is why they mix well but also why its a bit of a traumatic change if you are used to 75's.

It also should be noted that this is much more effective in 2x12 cabinets than 4x12's, much easier to get those two speakers working.

Another way to break speakers in is to get a transformer (can't remember the specs off-hand), and connect it up to the mains and the speaker- you then have your speaker running at a nice 60Hz without you doing anything Just put the speaker face down and cover it with blankets etc. to dampen the noise, and leave like that for a while.

yes, any cable thats not grounded will have noise of 60hz since wall (usa) output is 120 and its converted to AC. just stick a cable into your amp thats not plugged into anything to get 60hz. ive heard 70 hours is fine for break in - make sure to do this with new headphones as well.

Someone suggested something similar to me. Something about using a delay pedal and putting it on loop and playing some clean chords really loud(doesn't have to be dimed) and leaving it on looping the clean chords for an hour or two.

There is also a test tone where it goes through all the cycles from i think 2 to lightspeed that is used to seat the diaphragm. It helps but make sure you use it at a lower volume, because it likes to toast woofers.
