because its an active pickup and due to the compression caused by the preamp it has virtually no picking dynamics, therefore no matter how soft you pick, it will always play at the same volume. If you pick too hard it will just distort (unless you do an 18v mod).
also, this pickup is hot as hell so dont expect good cleans anyway.
thats the downside of actives man.

i'll have a guitar with duncans in it in about a month. I'll probably like those better. EMG's seem to be best for thrash and prog rock from my observation

While EMG's do the job fairly well, my cousin had the same problem. He installed them on his second guitar, and they sound sick until it comes time to pick clean parts.
I personally prefer DiMarzio, but that's a whole different story/thread.

you can increase the headroom by doing an 18v mod.
I believe it requires that you hook two 9volt batteries in parrallel. It should give you heaps more headroom.

Yeah I have my EMGs wired at 18 volts. A hell of a lot better than 9.

You'd want to hook them up in series for the 18v mod, if you did it in parallel, the EMGs would run for longer before the batteries ran out

Yeah, i'll be getting the 18 volt mod. also thinking about switching the 85 for an 89. Im also have another guitar that im going to put new pickups in. Am i right that duncans don't have quick connect and work with stock pots? because if they did i could do some switching around to see which ones i want in which guitar.

thanks for clearin that stuff up sqol
and yes, duncans are solder jointed and work with passive high impedance pots (which are stock with passive pickups)
i think emg is the only company with quick connect crap.
