Centralia

The ashes fall like snow
Beneath is an ever burning fire
I hear the sirens
Forcing our sudden evacuation
Why must we leave this Canaan
The place we rest our heads
Leaving everything we had
Walking over the present damage
Taking only our memories
The city is condemned
Yet I hear the sirens
I hear the land crying out
The sky becomes blackened
The ash collects like snow
Beneath is an ever buring fire
We must carry on with heads held high
Leaving those awaiting the ferryman
With currency covering their eyes

This is a rough draft of lyrics for an Opeth-ish song I'm composing and will hope to use in my feature endeavors.

Your piece was amazing. I have to ask if it's about the underground fire that's burned in Centralia, Illinois for so many years? My folks lived there temporarily when dad got transferred so I heard of it then.
Arlo Guthrie recorded a song his dad wrote about The 1913 Massacre and the style of this reminded me of that. Your imagery was right on.

EDIT: Now I'm very confused because what I've read on the net is that the disaster was in Pa. and I know that's not where I was!!

I did research on on wikipedia on Centralia before I wrote this and it states that the town is in Pennsylvania. It seemed so fascinating that a fire is constantly burning beneath the surface.

I found out about the town while doing research on Silent Hill. The town of Silent Hill (in the movie) is influenced by the town of Centralia, in which a mine fire beneath the town is forever burning, causing most of its residents to evacuate.

I'm glad you liked it. I often like to write songs about real life events and make them into short stories. I should start posting more of my lyrics more often, considering I gave up playing bass, guitar, and drums to become a singer.
