Power and Pre-amp
What really is the purpose of a power amp and pre amp. Is it like a mix and match alternative to an amp head?

Pretty much. Preamp = where your tone is made, power amp = what juices up the signal to get heard through your speakers (a really crude explanation.) For example, my old Line 6 PODxt Live was the preamp in my old rig, and I had a Carvin DCM600 acting as my power-amp.

And a head is basically both of these in one? But If I got a power and pre-amp, then I wouldn't need a head? Right?

LOL I hate being sick - I had forgotten to say that in my last post. Yeah, a regular old amp head is basically a pre and power amp in one. And you don't need a head if you have a preamp and power amp.

ok, well that's cool. I might take that approach next time I get an amp. It seems to have more tonal possibilities.
