5-way switch

i was at my local guitar store looking at an esp mh301 when i noticed it had a 5-way selector switch (now i now what the switch does) but the guitar only had 2 humbuckers so why would you need a 5 way switch im a little stumped as to why it had a 5way instead of a 3way anyone know why you can only get three combontaion with two humbuckers bridge, neck and both were do the other two go ?

You would nead a three-way swithch, not a five way. Although, you still could wire it properly even with the five way. But it's unnecessary. Five ways are for guitars with three pickups.

Ivanhoe is right, her link says it all. And NO, not all 5 toggle switch guitars have 3pick ups...

Its possible its got an EMG-89 or EMG-H in there? I have a 1992 Fender HM strat with them on, does it have a pull up vol knob or a ssmall toggle switch on it?, if it does, then you got some 89's in there. If you dont, then it might be a EMG-H, There both good... Heres a quick description of em'

The EMG-89's a dual Mode Pickup. Its two pickups in one; single and dual-coil with two separate outputs. At a flip of a switch you could change from teh crunch of a hum to the crisp clean of a single-coil. The tone modes can be selected with the included push-pull volume control or like i said the mini-toggle. The EMG-H. The EMG-H is a EMG-S single-coil pickup in a humbucking housing. its good for rhythm and its got added definition for chording, or for lead work when the bright attack of a single-coil pickup is called for. Heres a pic of my 92 HM strat with the EMG-89 and EMG-S on it.

From the ESP Website (look under Megaswitch):
http://www.espguitars.com/html/specialfeat.html

I think one of the even number positions "simulates" a strat single coil sound while the other even number position "simulates" a tele single coil sound. The other positions are like the standard dual humbucker switches. I have never heard the guitar, so I have no idea what it really sounds like...
