Uhh... Help needed

Well, since I'm new to this forum, I was wondering if someone could help me.
I started growling four months ago or so, and I'm in need of good tips how to use my diaphragm and how not to destroy my voice.
The thing is that, when I pushed that little charming "search" button, all sorts of things came out, and I really don't know where to start. I know that there are many threads with questions like these, but I'm really lost.
So, if anyone would be kind enough to help me, I would be really grateful.

first learn how to do the vocals using your throat. Then, start breathing with your stomach and scream as you dont use the throat anymore. Just try to make same sound without hurting your throat or something.

Thanks for the tip; I'll remember that.
But still, I've been trying to learn how to properly growl for some time now, and my throat doesn't hurt me anymore. At least not until I try to yell as if someone's killing me. XD

Believe it or not milk and cookies help. I just ate/drink some milk and cookies and I'm doing death metal vocals with no pain. Usually it starts to hurt after a little while but no pain now.

try chocolate milk. bands always order shitloads of it before concerts, and as everyone knows, chocolate helps with throat

I was being serious. My conclusion is that it was entirely the milk that effected my vocals and nothing to do with the cookies.

You probably shouldn't rely on milk or chocolate to help you sing since you wont always be able to get it before a show.

I personally think any lactose based food/drink is bad, well at least for me, I expect a clear throat, moist, yet clear because the phlegm from the lactose foods only clogs the throat and makes it harder for sound/projection to come out properly.

i was serious too. lol. chocolate makes phleghm which gives the throat more resistance to damage. try it, if you dont believe my. after one metalmania there was a list of what bands ordered before their performances, and despite pink ultra-soft toilet paper, cherry flavour chewing gum and few meters of barbed wire (that was for carpathian forest ) most of bands has ordered shitloads of chocolate milk.

I've noticed kool-aid helps build up phlegmy stuff too. Tangerine kool-aid is really good.

Gngh.

Milk, and hard chocolate, sticks itself in the throat in the same charming way that stinking slime from a bog sticks to the foot of the unwary. That is why you get what we call a growl, the vocal chords are carrying more weight than they are made for. This might be OK, if all you're after in life vocal-wise is growling, as what you are doing is comparable with lifting weights 20kg or so above your actual limit.
Someone said to do it with your throat before learning to use the diaphragm. Don't do it - the vocal chords, and the 60+ muscles around it, are just about the most delicate and fragile piece of your anatomy... good to create sounds, but weak when it comes to sustaining them. All - ALL - the force should come from below, right from the start. I know a few people who are accomplished growlers, but they missed out on the above. Take a listen to Opeth's vocalist. He didn't.

chocolate milk is good for deeper more gurgly growls but it also causes a lot of strange sounds you cant control. I find that you can do a lot more growling techniques a lot cleaner without anything added. If youve trained your vocals chords properly you can get them to do the same thign every time whereas with added variables your growl my not sound up to par before a show.

agreed, any lactose in your vocals makes it cut out easier, it also makes it have an on/off/on/off gurgle sound, and not a pleasant one you'd get from training, more along the lines of an awful one that ruins the vocals.

I can't even do inhales at all if I have mucus in my throat.

Though, on a sidenote, a little bit of chocolate can be a help to find where your growl is - that is, after you've learned proper technique for vocals, and only small bites.
