I absolutely love their debut but didn't like psalms as much, mainly because of the new vocal approach. It just sounds like any other bdm vocalist now. But at least the riffs are still just as killer.

i beg to differ, i've been writing mostly death metal reviews for about a year now (recieving an average of 5 new albums a month) and it really surprised my how many bands just sound averagely brutal or extreme.
not that they suck, i mean tech death is one of the hardest genres to master, but because of the magnitude of the current scene, the majority automatically becomes mediocre, despite the fact that they use fingerbreaking riffs or sick blast-beats.

There are still plenty of bands doing innovative stuff, so long as you stray from the more overhyped/popular bands you'll come across some very good stuff. If you don't like the approach in bdm that is a different story, but lack of innovation is really not the case. If someone doesn't lack a particular style it just sounds all the same to him/her.
And the whole "bad bands outnumber the good in death metal/whatever" mentality is really flawed, as it holds true with practically every kind of music.

Of course it appears to be similar initially, but hearing rhythmic ideas that I didn't hear on Psalms.
Doctor: I agree with you for the most part, most brutal death metal is generic as fuck, but this band (and a couple of others) sure as hell aren't. You may be looking at it a bit too..... what's the word..... directly? Hmm, maybe that's not the best word, I can't quite think of it right now. |
