What amp and guitar setup is this for? Every guitar/amp combo is going to sound different, rendering your presets useless for most people.

So basically spike the highs and lows and scoop the mids?

The sweet spot mid freqs in just about any metal/rock tone will be lower than the highs and/or lows in most mixes, $$$alica or not. A scooped EQ structure is not the Devil. Boost and lower all frequencies as needed to zero a specific tone.

I guess Death by Monkeys referred zu Martin Baggwell, whos only post so far consists of randomly quoting one-year old stuff without adding anything except "hi" and a pointless smilie.

Posting contextless EQ settings = giant waste of time.

Metallica used a Mesa MK 2 c+ preamp into a Marshall power amp w/ 6550 for Master and Justice. Those preamps have the bass mid and treble knobs in the circuit before 3 of the gain stages. So Metallica would set the treble high, some mids, and no bass, to get the tone really chunky on palm mutes, then use the graphic eq to scoop out all the mids and pump up the bass. Most amps just have the one eq section after the gain stages, Soooo with most setups you could just get an eq pedal and put it before the amp with it set to a frown (mids pushed up), and suck the mids with the eq on the amp. Its the same thing as using a tube screamer to tighten up a high gain amp, because they have a big mid boost.

Also, on the first 2 albums, Metallica used Marshall amps. Kill em All is a modded Marshall JMP 2203 (basically a JCM800). That amp got stolen, so on Ride they used stock JMP's with a tubescreamer, which James hated saying that all of the distortion should come from the amp. On these albums it sounds like they use plenty of mids, at least half way up or so. Old Marshalls sound weird with the mids all the way down. The black album and on is lots of different amps/settings.

There are cheaper ways to get their tones I've learned. I recently picked up a Marshall 8100 Valvestate. (yes Valvestate) All I can say is that this thing is fucking awesome. It is one of the best ss amp I've ever played and it can get all the classic metallica, thrash and death/black metal tones. Metallica basically compressed the shit out of their sound on MOP and AJFA so it shouldn't be too surprising that you can pull those tones from a good ss head. This amp is really versatile too, it can get really Marshally sounding and I have a Jcm800 original so I'm not just bullshitting. I picked it up for $150 and if you have money to burn check it out. I'm using it with V30s too so that also helps with tone and sounding like Metallica, Decapitated, Suffocation, and Death etc. Spend the fortune if you want for a good metal head but you can great pretty fucking badass tone from these as well as Crate Shockwave heads which are like $300
