Hey everyone!
New member here, huge fan of metal since an early age. I'm a drummer, but I'd like to try my hand in vocals. I consider myself to have a fairly deep voice, and some decent sounding screams.
Within the last year or so, I've discovered Despised Icon and thought, hey, it'd be a nice foot-in-the-door of vocalizing some heavy stuff with a good role model. That man is Steve Marois.
My main question is, how does he do it? A video example
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOOXeWDO7dw (He's the one in the black tanktop)
Right from the beginning, he nails an exceedingly low gutteral growl. Is that an inhaled growl, much like a pig squeal, or is it a very loose, throaty exhale?
Secondly, I have no idea how he reaches such a shrill scream during some of his screams (Around 1:34). I can only assume they're inhaled, because I can't even imagine that coming out normally, lol.
However, if they were inhaled, how then, does he transition at 2:30-2:50 from a normal yelling voice to a shrill inhale so smoothly, if that is indeed what he is doing? (When he says "Alright motherf*ckers, let's *ROOOOOAR*" like a huge badass)
Basically, I'm curious as to what vocal techniques Steve (tanktop baby) employs to reach his gut-wrenchingly wicked screams. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
