Suggest Me An Overdrive Pedal
Hey All,
I'm needing some recommendations for an overdrive pedal (stompbox). I'm currently playing through an 80's model Peavey VTM120 all tube amp head. I basically want something to give it that gain boost and not overshadow the natural characteristics of my amp. Thanks!

+1 on maxon
I like the ibanez tube screamer, i own the maxon though, and i can assure you that it's awsome. You may want a noisegate as well though...

Pr0az: No thanks!
Thanks for the replies all. I'm going to look into that Maxon.
EDIT: What's the Maxon OD-9 like? Similar to the OD808?

I'm guessing that if the OD-9 was as good as the 808 it would be way more popular than it is today.. it just seems the 808 gets more use and rep, so i would assume the majority of people find it alot better.
Anyway the 808 is a masterpiece if you like Tubescreamer type pedals, but it's transparency is debatable.. It's a transparent tubescreamer all right but there is def. more transparent pedals on the market.
Many people like its sound coloration though (including me), YMMV.

the OD-9 is a less durable version with a slightly different EQ. Don't get me wrong, they sound exactly the same, the tone knob just has to be in different places to get the same tone. Its less durable because the pots are circuit board mounted instead of chassis mounted (like the 808). And it might be buffered bypass instead of tr00 bypass.
anyways. I have an 808, and its great. it can be super transparent if you want it to be, and can also colour your tone a bit. I like it because the slight colour it has gets me more clarity from my amp, and makes the tone better imo.

speakin of that... even if the 808 ISNT tr00 bypass, it has the right switch to do it, so it would actually only be a 10 minute solder job and you wont need any extra parts. The 9 however has a funky switch that needs to be replaced in order to get your tr00 N0rweg1an kvlt krieg gr1m byp@ss!!! just an idea you might wanna consider.

Once again, very useful post! Way to add something to the topic...
Back on topic, I scored a Keeley modded Boss SD-1 that is KILLER. Definitely worth checking out.

I've heard some clips of the keeley modded MT-2 and it sounds totally amazing as well, you'd think they'd have to gut the entire pedal to get it to sound remotely decent. They do some pretty bad ass jobs.

Transparent: It doesn't color your tone that much.
Bypass:
If the pedal is true bypass the circuit is totally out of your signal when switched off and minimizes tone sucking. The signal will still pass through some stuff if the pedal isn't true bypass and that sucks tone.

No, it wasn't funny. It was amusing BECAUSE it was cliche. Now pat yourself on the back, you wasted 12 seconds out of everyone's day to bitch about something that has not a damn thing to do with the topic. You earned it buddy!
Tubescreamers always make good boost pedals. If I had the link John Holland sent me ages ago about a modded TS pedal, I'd give it to you. But since I don't, just go with the Maxon. :P I might have to check it out myself.
