muddy sound

i have a crate 2x12 combo, a eq, a metal zone pedal, and a jackson dxmg. i cant get a heavy distortion that is clear enough to understand, especially when palm muting. does anyone have any suggestions. i want the guitar to sound similar to suffocation or tbdm. you know how the distortion is heavy as hell but you can always hear every note?

Guitar is a middle instrument. That is, the MIDRANGE is where it sounds best. When you try and define your guitar sound, you may well be tryign to make it sound like 2 guitars and bass, like you hear on CD. Guitars (even heavy Death metal guitars) are going to be mainly mid to cut through a mix, either live or in the studio.

Basically, Mids are your friend, too much bass isn't (leave that to the bassist).

Also... TURN DOWN YOUR GAIN. You'll be surprised. Less is more with gain.
