Alot depends on what amp you play through.

A lot of people go for the boss metal zone. I have one myself, actually, and I would only recommend it if you don't mind spending a lot of time dialing in your tone.

My setup of an Electro-Harmonix Metal Muff with Top Boost and MXR KFK1 Kerry King 10-Band Equalizer deliver some mean metal sounds through my Crate 2x12 amplifier

Distortion
I usually try to avoid stomp boxes. I own a Madison Divinity head, and madison cab. The head distortion is perfect for me and i play in black metal band.

First of all i urge you to put any distortion (Even the amp's distortion) and then tune the amp EQ to Highs:10, mid:0, low:10
You'll get a great death metal distortion sound better then most of the low end effects (depending on your amp).
also take a look at Distortion. U can find there sound samples of all the standard distortion effects.

Pay attention in English class.
As for getting a distortion pedal go with the metal zone pedal of the Dime Bag distortion pedal.
