What most people perceive their selves as, are usually wrong. It's very hard to keep up with what your heritage is. People can easily lie and your partner will believe you. Then you tell your kids that you're from xxx and they will believe and so on.

My parents have told me that I'm Irish and German. Find that hard to believe because I'm brown haired. Guess it makes sense though or maybe not. Red + Blonde = Brown?

Just because you are Irish and German doesn't mean you are automatically a blonde or redhead. Many Irish and German people are brunette as are many other Europeans. my family hasn't moved from this place in a long time, it's straight white trash back several generations. Before that, Scottish back to Robert Bruce. I might also guess eastern european based on facial features and stuff (well, the celebrity face scan thing says I look like V.I. Lenin and the first cosmonaut, Yuri whats his face. Also Karl Marx and Sophie Marceau ). I have thick wavy dark hair, very dark eyes, and a red-highlighted beard that grows up close to my eyes. My mother researches this stuff all the time, she has huge geneaology files scattered around her home.

Aparantly, my father was halve English, but more than that I don't know, since I don't have contact with him or that part of my family.

The imediate generations from my mothers side are all Dutch, but I share the same last name as an important British royal house that was involved in the War of the Roses. There is some evidence of my ancestors immigrating from Britain.

I was surprised to find out that my adopted mom, who I thought was probably German, has a last name that indicates her family on one side was from Switzerland. She's also French canuck.


They're having the first Finnfest in town this year. I drove through the cemetery to see if the family flowers needed watered and there were some people putting Finnish flags on those folks graves. I just hope it doesn't start looking too junky looking in there and lose the old cemetery look. It is a nice gesture so I'm torn about it. No biggie.

I wouldn't be surprised if my grandparents have that kind of information but i don't know too much more than what my dad has told me based on his research. My dad believes that we have some native american in us but my grandfather always denied it. Say some woman in your family cheated on the husband and it was never known, obviously there's a big chance that the woman would keep it a secret. Not saying it happens but id bet money there is a family out there that had a similar situation. Say a family adopts a child and raises it as it were there own, never telling him/her that they were adopted, im sure the parents would bring them up knowing that their heritage is the same as theirs.

Actually, the bloodline between Irish and Spanish goes way back. The Iberians were some of the first people to travel to Ireland and encountered the Goidils. Irish people today have around 80% of their genes in common with Spanish Basques.

Isn't dark hair also very dominant in Ireland too? (Hair, thick black facial hair, eyebrows, body hair etc) I've noticed that with most of the Irish people I have met... they either have red hair or almost-black hair.

My father told me it's the same for Welsh people, which would explain my thick black eyebrows, very dark thick hair and my terrible fucking case of black 5 o'clock shadow... yet my skin is pale as a ghosts ass go figure. I know why I dislike the French. But if I turned out to be French (and this is hypothetical, because I know I won't), I can't imagine why I'd care. Pretty much every nationality is fucked.

And asking your family is an option. Somebody probably has a pretty good idea what country they came from originally, and, even if they don't, this country has pretty good records of its white immigrants. So, if you don't trust them, do some research. But you've really got no good reason not to trust them, despite what these people say, because

a. European peoples tried very hard not to intermingle before coming to America
and
b. Most people in America know their family history back to whichever of the 'old countries' they came from, often down to the village or at least the region

Now, if you combine these two facts, your family oral history is probably accurate as to what countries your ancestors came from, and they were probably there in genetic isolation for several hundreds years, meaning that your family history's probably pretty accurate and you're almost definitely a dumb little bitch for doubting it.

But, again, you can do the research yourself if you care to and know your parents' last names. You won't have to spend any money or get a DNA test, and it'll take up the incredible amounts of time and energy you spend being a dumbass on here, and so would be best for everybody involved.

Requiem..pretty easy indication is from the last names of your relatives..

I've got pretty specific reasons for disliking a certain type of French people, and a lot of evidence to dispute how 'nice' you all are. I also live about two hours from Quebec and have spent a lot of time there, probably more than you've spent in predominately English-speaking parts of the world. And, because of the proximity, we have an unusual number of Canadian citizens right here, and I've hung out with and dated French-Canadians on this side of the border. I can sing the goddamn French parts of the Canadian national anthem, and have with French-Canadians on several occasions. In Chicago I, for some reason I still don't understand, ended up with a lot of French people in my circle of friends and spent a lot of time with them there. And, when I've been in Europe, so have French people. So don't tell me I need exposure.

But, like I just said, every nationality is fucked. I have a great deal of contempt for several of the countries I actually am descended from. I don't really single the French out except to point out that, when I say I dislike the French, I have specific experiences explaining why (which I'm obviously not going to share) whereas Requiem does because he's American.

And you're not losing your language. If you'd just remember where you left it you'd find it in no time.
