Couple ?'s About Tubes

1) Will tubes go bad after time just sitting? I mean... will they lose their potency over time if they are not being used? Any different circumstance when installed in an amp but still just sitting over time? Yea, stupid question, but I'm serious.

2) Does heat affect tubes or an all tube amp head? Like if it sits in a garage all summer?

Thanks!

Most likey, no. To both questions. A well made tube wont go bad by just sitting, unless it goes through extreme temperature changes. An amp that has a sketchy build quality MIGHT have something go wrong when being exposed to higher tempuratures regularly, but its still unlikely.

think of it this way. Will a lightbulb go bad in different temperatures?

And age really doesnt matter. People dish out hundreds of bucks for 1940's mullards and stuff like that.

from my experience, yes. My dad was telling me that preamp tubes get warmer and more tame with age, kinda like speakers. Thus, my marshall doesnt sound anywhere as near as aggressive as it should (yes i still have the 14yr old pretubes in it)

But hey, theres such thing as tube drive microphone preamps, which i bet theyd sound like SEX in.

you dont always have to use tubes with gitters

Well, yes and no. My main amp is Laney VH100R which is more of a Marshall on steroids kind of amp and I am not into hi gain br00tal types of distortion. Thats why I sold my old Powerball.
