IM still not fimiliar with all that rackmount stuff adn whatnot
but what do these do?

in a classic amp 'head' or in a 'combo' (amp+speaker) usually the preamp and poweramp are combined in one unit.

with a rack you can split it up, so you have your preamp for generating tone, and your poweramp for boosting the signal going to your speakers.
pre > power > speakers
