Celestion Speakers
I'm looking at replacing 4 12" 's in my guitar cab with some better speakers. I don't how big of a difference this will make but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on speakers for a metal head?!?! Thanks.

It would be really cool if you told us what cab it is, what speakers are in it and what you want to do with your tone (more bass, more highs? More mids? Tighter sound?).

It's a Marshall MF280A with generic celstions in it.. I'm looking for a real metal type of sound that doesn't crackle out.. a lot of low end with low mids and a nice high end.

Umm correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't that Cab come with Vintage 30's? Those are like the most popular metal speaker. If you think they sound 'generic' I would say that something else is wrong in your chain. What head/ pickups are you using?

I'm pretty sure the MF280 has relabeled Celestion Vintage 30's in it. Which are very nice speakers. You said you're interested in something with a little less midrange though, and for that Celestion G12t-75's come to mind. A lot of people are starting to mix up the speakers in there cabs and the most common speaker mix up for metal seems to be two vintage 30's and two G12t-75's in an "X" pattern.
What is the rest of your rig? Head, guitar, pedals, ect...
I'm more of an Eminence guy personally. The Swamp Thangs are pretty intense.

I would rather go Swamp Thang / Texas Heat in an X pattern. I use one of each in my 2x12 and it sounds great.

you can get pretty much any of the names of eminences speakers "texas heat" or whatever in almost any size, and in different impedances.
Whats the rest of the setup like? with that knowledge, making suggestions will be ALOT easier.
I'm guna recommend emience manowar's, theyre PRIME for tone. Or if you want to blow a pile of dough, get 2 celestion golds and do the X pattern.

You mean you want lots of piercing treble or smooth, nice sounding treble?
The MF cab is pretty small in size so you want a bassier / darker speaker.. it's not really a good match for V30s. The MF400 cab actually sounds better i hear (G12k-100).
http://eminence.com/pdf/tone_guide.pdf
Check it out for starters, then check out the individual product pages for each speaker to learn more.
For starters check out the Tonker, The Wizard, Swamp Thang and Texas Heat.
Some comparisons: Swamp Thangs are more rumble-bassy and huge, while the Tonkers are punchier and will kick you more in the chest in comparison to each other. The Texas Heat has a little less bass than both but is tighter and as punchy as the Tonker but has a searing midrange that will set you apart in a band mix without getting fizzy or harsh in the high end.. the punchy & pissed-off aggressive sound of the texas heat mixes exceptionally well with the more rumble-like bass & annoyed EVIL "growling" mids of the Swamp Thangs IMO, it sounds like thunder! I've also had all Tonkers in my cab and i liked it, it sounded like a texas heat with more bass and a little warmer. Sort of like a middle between the Texas Heat and the 'thang, except the evil thunderish growl of the swam thang was pretty much not there.
And don't worry about too much Fat/Round bass response, they are still tight unless you go ape shit with gain, volume, bass and mids. Esp. in a small tight punchy cab like yours you would do good to mix fat/round and fat/chunky speakers, the difference is mostly in the magnet assembly between different bass responses. Only differences i can spot externally between the texas heat and the swamp thang is that the swamp thang's magnet is larger and the cone is slightly different. The spider and dustcap are the same, voice coil is different though according to specs.
Strange thing is that the Tonker and the Texas Heat look _exactly_ the same in all aspects, save for the color and the larger magnet on the Tonker. Voice coil seems the same too.
Oh and also differences are really not that large as they seem on paper, they are noticable but not immense like changing your amp. Not as subtle as changing tubes though.
