After listenting to the clip labeled "better" I am terrified to listen to the clip that says "worse". That. Tone. Sucks.

Yeah, that sounds like my tone about 15 years ago when i had no idea!!! LOL
Buy a nice amp and be done with it. Or if your recording on PC use GuitarRig2, It's amazing, but you could prolly pull that shit from it if you still wanted..  |

slipknot are using rivera knucklehead's right now (assuming that's why you're interested in them) ... but that's kind of an expensive route to get that tone.
your best bet i think would be to get an old/cheap solid state preamp that's geared towards distortion. on the early slipknot stuff i heard they used a rocktron maxe. something like that would be a good place to start ... probably around 100 or less if you can find one. also the suggestion on hc regarding a randall is probably good. or a crate or some other solid state high gain amp.
basically the tone you are after can be generated by some low end gear, so you don't need those bling heads.

load a krankenstein or a 5150 with shuguang 12ax7's or electro harmonix 12ax7's, turn the trebel all the way up, plug in a squire strat, make sure you're using a huge box of like... twenty 4 inch speakers.... if you must have 12 inchers, get something with celestion greenbacks...
the tone from the above setup will still be pretty far from the shit that just abused my ears... but close enough.
