Fender Strat
I'm looking to buy an electric and I've got a chance to buy a fender strat for $300 used. It's in great shape and comes with some other stuff but what I'm wondering is if it would even be capable of playing the type of music I want to learn. I'm pretty uneducated when it comes to electric guitar so I really have no clue.

Jari uses a Fender and he is one of the best metal guitarist I know, though I'm disappointed in his choice of guitar :P.
What type of music do you intend on playing?

A wide range of stuff. Death metal, metalcore, mathcore, hardcore etc. I'm guessing I'd have to swap out the pickups in order to be able to play any of that on a strat, right?

I'd probably get something else if you're going to play hard-metal strictly on it, but otherwise, a nice strat is a good choice.

+1. Cheap Ibanez are really good.

Try to find a cheap Ibanez, instead. It'll have humbuckers (though you'll likely want to change them if they're still stock), a thin neck, good for playing fast songs on, and possibly even a tremolo (if it's a cheap guitar, likely a liscenced Floyd, but as long as you aren't too crazy with it its tuning stability shouldn't be a problem). Plus, if looks matter to you, you won't look awkward playing metal on an Ibanez (you don't see anybody playing strats in death metal bands). Check out their RG series; their RG series is pretty famous in the world of metal guitars.

get a Jackson js30 series, only $300 dollars, all the cool shapes, nice neck, pretty damn good stock humbuckers. They don't have tremolos, but if your starting out that will be more than perfect

Given how many times you said -core, anything with EMG humbuckers will work.

Cheap Ibanez with EMG's in it... where have I seen that before
I love my Fender Strat. I put a SD Hotrails in the bridge and it screams. They aren't as much 'suited' for playing demanding metal, but they get excellent tone. I love that Strat/65' Reverb tone!

You can make a Mexican strat sound great even for metal if you want, but an Ibanez will probably be the best choice for you.

If you want to sound like everyone else, get yourself a cheap Ibanez/Jackson/etc.., swap out the stock pickups for some EMGs, blah, blah blah... But you can play metal on a strat as easily as you can play it on any one of those guitars. Compliment that bad boy with a nice amp and a metalzone and you got all the balls you need. Never limit your range of guitars by the style of music you want to play, that's just stupid. Who wants to sound like every other metal player out there anyway?

start witha westone or kramer, they are THE best value for money, and they are nice as fuck. i picked up a secondhand westone in dream condition for 500, but you can get them on ebay for like 100 - 300. kramers will go from 300 - 500 i think. since i bought my westone i never looked back.

Ibanez RG series
Kramer Striker ( www.musicyo.com or ebay)
Charvel Model series(ebay)
Jackson DXMG, DKMG, DK2M, but stay away from the JS30's.

I have a JS30RR and it's really good. The neck is thin, low action with zero buzzing. I even have a duncan performer in it and it still sounds great. The only problem I have with it is the rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays, and thats purely cosmetic. The other guitarist in my band has a JS30 Kelly and it's good too, but my Rhoads has a glossier neck. Mine is a 2005 model, and his is a 2007. So maybe the age is the difference.
