Maxon OD808

As much as I love the Bad Monkey it doesn't tighten up the sound as much as I'd like on my Engl, does anyone have any experience with the Maxon as a boost? Also how does the EQ balance shift when this is on, more mids, thinner sound etc, will I need to get an EQ as well? The Digitech really fattens the sound and adds bass an depth, so is it worth spending so much more on the maxon and possibly an EQ?

Nah if your amp already doesn't get as tight as you want to with the bad monkey the Maxon isn't going to make a world of a difference. Try new preamp tubes. Tung-Sols maybe.

I think we might need to elaborate a little on what your definition of "tight" is. ENGL's tend to be voiced on the tighter side IME. Can you run off what tubes including brand are in the amp?

The Thunder isn't as tight as the Fire/Powerball though I presume. Their power section is entirely different, and they have 1 less preamp stage tube I think, so it's a very different amp...

Haha, I'm just changing my amp instead. Currently bidding on a Fireball. They have the same number of preamp tubes btw: 3 (or 4 if you count the phase inverter).

Well did you try tweaking the BM? Turn bass to 9:00 o clock and treble to 11:00 or something, that will emulate a tubescreamer better.

LOL so you're going to have the same exact setup as me? (Fireball + Framus 2x12)

Be sure to let me know how it sounds with the bad monkey, I might get one!

Haha yeah hopefully, not intentional, just seems the best option! I nearly went for the Blackmore but figured 100w is overkill for bedroom playing (60w is only slightly saner...). I felt a bit annoyed after buying the Thunder because I didn't want to comprimise for the sake of saving a bit of money but in the end I did and the Thunder wasn't exactly right. I'm looking to get something that will satisfy my tone GAS for a couple of years. Oh and Jopop, it wasn't so much that I wanted the Tubescreamer midspike sound I just wanted something that would give me more of that blunt-5150 style chug. The Thunder just didn't have the balls to carry it off either (always a problem when playing at low volumes I guess).

Haha, I don't really like the idea of having to change 10 tubes when it needs revalving... plus I like my cleans.

FWIW i think my 5150 sounds very decent clean with the bias at a reasonable level. Stock it's buzzzZzzz and wierd :/

And i agree on the retube costs..

I'm getting a fireball too >< The 5150 is a great amp but it's just too unconsistent in tone/volume for me to use as a practice and rehearsal amp at once..

Only shame about the fireball is that it has a clean channel
