Cheap Keyboard
can any point me towards a cheap keyboard that can make sort of i guess the word would be symphonic sounds? like a keyboard that sounds like an organ without spending a bajillion dollars on a real organ. i'm looking for something that can create the sounds of the beginning of Dimmu Borgir's Serpentine Offering or the (i think) phantom of the opera duh duh duh duuuh! when i look at keyboards on musiciansfriend or whatnot i never really know what to look for as far as the organ sound goes

Well what do you want first of all, full 88 keys, weighted/non-weighted, loads of sounds/just several diff., use for just practice/use for recording? Price range also.

number of keys doesn't matter, as far as weight preferably small i don't have that big of a bedrom, as far as sounds just something that can sound like an organ without paying a bajillion dollars for a real one, and its just for messing around don't plan on recording with it, and as cheap as i can get it

Well, for weighted, I meant the keys. I have a Casio Px-110 and they're really great for the price. The Yamaha YPG's are more keyboards than digital pianos, so they've got less keys and lighter/smaller keys, but they're pretty good for the price. Most decent keyboards come with organ tones. It's pretty much a standard tone.

are you using it in a band or just by yourself on your comp?
if you're just solo/recording, i'd suggest getting a little midi controller keyboard and using that in conjunction with your computer. load up w/e sounds you want the possibilities are endless. and a controller is a handy thing to have around.

Mentioning those midi keyboards, how in the hell do you put stuff on them. My freind has one and we can't figure out how to put any sounds on it. All that damn thing is gathering dust.

^ you don't store sounds on it, you use it to control external banks. all music-making software uses midi, and with most programs now you can load pretty much any sound or utility you want (using VST's). and the sounds that you can get now are fucking incredible! will sound better than you can even imagine. even if you have zero talent, the sounds themselves are so good that you will feel like a genius. all you need is some basic taste to arrange things. there are a lot of tools to help in every area of your deficiency as a player.
anyways to get you started, open your favorite recording program (garageband, cubase, cakewalk, auditon, whatever...) and load an instrument in one of the tracks. your keyboard should be able to control that instrument (read the help to make sure your midi is set up properly). after you get bored with the bank in that program, learn about VST's, download and open some in the program. endless fun.
it's worth taking a few seconds to figure out. probably the most powerful musical tool available.
