changing gauge + tunings + spring on floyd rose
what?! i'm chaning the string gauge on a floyd rose?
WHAT?! i'm changing the tuning on my floyd rose?!
WHAT!?!?! I"M CHANGING SPRING TENSION ON MY FLOYD ROSE?!
whats wrong with me...?
well, i'm bored of the standard E tunings, so i decided to change it to doing either drop C, or drop D tunings...and yes, i am well aware of the fact that i would need to get a thicker gauge to do so. right now, i'm using a 11-38(light and panzy shit) for standard E with high E and B being the same gauge...but i just got hold of some GHS boomer string for 11-50 that i think shoul do the trick....
anyways, my question is, for a 11-50 set, how many springs should i be using? the lutheirs say that since i'm tuning it down, it wont really require me to do much other than maybe loosen or tighten my springs(and for 50-100 dollars, they'll do it for me....i'm more of a hands on person that like to do shit himself...), but i only have 2 springs right now, and i just bought 2 more, just in case... so, should i use 4 springs? or 3? and does it matter position i put em in?
and also, my guitar is made of base wood. and supposedly base wood is a fragile wood, and shouldnt be tampered with. so that got me thinking. if the spring tension is too great, is it possible for the spring clamp(those 2 screws that attach the springs to guitar) to come loose, and come off? if that is a possibility, i'll just stick to standard E
thanks

I change tunings and string gauges on my guitars(all w/ trems) relatively often. I always use 3 springs, all horizontal, even for drop A with 59-13's, C# with 58-11's, D with 52-11's, and E/Eb with 46-10's. You don't need less or more springs unless you go crazy with really light strings or extremely tight strings in high tunings.

i recently drop my jackson with a floyd into C standard using 13 - 56 guage strings... but it seem like the strings were pulling my bridge up and that 3 springs was not enough tension for that gauge of strings. Will adding another spring fix that problem? I then put it into B standard and decided i hated it and blocked my trem off with a piece of wood and brought it back up to C ... also could any one give me a good description of how to get my guitars intonation correct?

No just tighten the screws on the spring clamp, unless the change in string tension is so huge that it won't work no matter how much you tighten it, then go for a 4th spring.

humm...Soeru, perhaps you can help
i slapped on another spring on my guitar, and went for C tuning. worked fine, but then i realised that my strat was eatting dust, so i pulled those strings off of my floyd rose, and slapped it on my strat(fixed bridge). the strat was fine. then i decided to go back to the standard E tuning on my floyd rose and also using the same set of strings(i pulled off the 3rd spring) but now i get this nasty fret buzz on my G string on the 8th, 12th, and 19th fret. well, its not a fret buzz, its just a dead note....
the fuck happend?
either way, i'm taking it to the lutheir tomorrow, he owes me a free set up for 1 year.

Probably the change in string tension(higher gauge, different tuning, then you took all the strings off) made the neck bow or relieve itself, it probably just needs a minor truss rod and string action adjustment, nothing serious. Always do some kind of truss adjustment if you're gonna do huge changes in string tension/tuning. Don't think you can get away going from E with 42-9's to C with 58-13's without adjusting springs, action and truss rod, unless you have a really really solid guitar(eg: 3 piece neck or something, but I'd still suggest doing the minor truss adjustments especially if it's such an expensive guitar).

well...its not that expensive of a guitar at about 500 bucks. but i rather get the lutheir to do it for me. when i got my first guitar(which i made) i messed up big time on the bridge action, and its truss rod. i messed up the bridge by using some wrong tools, and thus, i cant raise, or lower the bridge anymore. i wore out the lil screws on the bridge. and the headstock got tons of scratches due to my stupidity....and i dont want the same for the guitar that i didnt make, and i love....so lets see.
but thanks. i would have given you a beer or something...but i got lazy
