Head puts out to much for cab?

I have a MG412 cab hooked up to a Peavey 5150. Sometimes while playing the sound cuts, other times its seems ok on a lower volume. I've had the head checked out, my electronics in my gutiar, and tried other heads with this cab with the problem going away when I switched heads. Could the 5150 be putting out to much power for this cab to handle?

You mean the little switch on the back of the head? It's set to 8 ohms, the label on the back says 8 ohms for cab . Correct me if im wrong but i think they should be matching?

The power tubes are probably starting to die. The cab won't really "cut out" as you say.

Volume dropouts are generally a poweramp failure symptom, get it checked out u probably need new tubes like ppl are suggesting. If it were a cab problem the speakers would be fuzzing when they're on the verge of breaking.

The MG cabs should take your 5150 but NEVER go beyond 12 o clock on the master volume on your 5150 on that cab, it's not that high wattage(you should always have around double the wattage your amp puts out to be safe, ESPECIALLY if it's a tube amp).

I had the head looked at by a technician, he told me there was nothing wrong with it. I'll try hooking another cab up to it as soon as possible and get back to you guys.

Would the MG cab being low quality/old have anything to do with this?

grrrrrr

the cab is only for 100 watts i beilve and a 5150 is pushing out 120 if cranked it may be ur speaker cables. there may be a shortage in the conectors or something along thouse lines

Not to change the subject, but on a side note...in the future I'd recommend upgrading to a better cabinet. In my old band the guitarist had the same rig you have, he got a better cabinet (5150 cab) and it made a huge world of difference both in sound quality and volume. As for it cutting out...maybe theres something in the amp that cuts it off to prevent any kind of damage to the poweramp if whatever its going out to can't handle the signal?
