Favorite first wave black metal band?

So...

Celtic Frost?/ Hellhammer?
Venom?
Mercyful Fate?
Bathory?

Before some smart arse points it out....I know the first wave BM bands were mostly thrash. But they were the first bands to actually pioneer the black metal genre.

I will go first...
Hellhammer!!

Mercyful Fate is the best band of the bunch, but I'm not sure they're black metal. Most BM fans deny the link. The only other band there I like is Bathory. I don't care for Venom, and I strongly dislike Celtic Frost.

Neither of these are 1st wave at all, they're widely recognized to be 2nd wave. 1st wave = Mötorhead influenced speed-ish prototype black metal, like the first Bathory record.

There is a widespread internet rumour that Mercyful Fate was a black metal band... I wonder if it's written in that Lords of Chaos book or something. It's pretty damn stupid. I'll fight anyone who thinks that makes sense, fuh realz.

Mercyful Fate is NWOBHM/power metal, and they are the best of the bunch. They get lumped into the black metal thing because they've been a huge influence on the genre. The best 1st wave BM band in my opinion is Bathory.

That's what I thought at first, but it also occured to me that my favorite personal recurring grammatical error is to occasionally leave out necessary prepositions, especially "that" and occasionally "of" and that it happened to coincide with the quoted text.

but who did the song "black metal"? and who said "our music is power metal, venom metal, black metal, not heavy metal cos that's for the chicks"?
Venom did, thats why i still call them black. i agree that they sound more like motorhead but anyway, ist just for principle

Black metal wouldn't exist or be called Black metal if it wasn't for Venom... and the image of spikes chains leather etc was done by venom too. motorhead never had that sort of image.... Venom were the heaviest band at the time (and the noisiest :P ) and maybe one of the fastest... really extreme shit!!!

I have to go with Bathory. "Blood, Fire, Death" is a badass album. How metal is it to have a 3 minute intro of Odin riding a horse across Nordland? It's a great album.

Ulver's Bergtatt album, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Borknagar, Limbonic Art, Immortal, Gorgoroth.

^way better than any of the aforementioned bands^

Dude, how can you say that? Emperor is on par maybe, and the first two Dimmu albums are pretty classic but none of these bands can even touch Bathory and none of them were as genuine as Mayhem. Vintersorg from Borknagar is an amazing vocalist, but that doesn't make Borknagar classic. Gorgoroth is fun and a good listen but not very memorable. Immortal is another band that is great but no song of theirs is extremely memorable. Old Man's Child would fit in nice with that list by the way. That's Galder from Dimmu's original band. To be fair though, I've never heard the Ulver album or Limbonic Art. But neither are first wave....

i don't know to me first wave stuff was just badly produced thrash with very satanic laden lyrics. I guess mf was decent, even though you know how i feel about what they have to say about what i believe in.

Emperor were better than every other BM band combined, but the topic of discussion is first wave BM bands. Try to work within those confines.

Altough I like the bands Kalmah posted a lot, I think the best first wave bm bands were Celtic Frost and Bathory.
Yes, 'blood fire death' and 'morbid tales/return of the emperor' are all clasic releases.

Well, I have to say that both Venom and Bathory are my fav of the two
With Bathory, they had the look (leather,chains,spikes..etc.) they also had the perfect black metal sound
But Without Venom, they wouldn't be called 'Black Metal' seeing as how Venom made the song Black Metal and had the most influence on Black Metal they are pretty much the next best

But listening to Venom now I understand that they do sound a lot like Motorhead, just faster.

VENOM FOR SURE!Fuckin' awesome! Not excaclty Black Metal(well, actually not even close)but they came up with the term!

Welcome To Hell is a fuckin' super dooper classic!

Never liked the other bands......................

You might as well wanna check out Piledriver, the "Metal Inquisition"lp released in 1984.They consider to be one of the forfathers of BM.They were into sick and dirty Heavy Metal with songs like Sex With Satan,Sodomise The Dead and stuff.A lot of Black Metal/Death Metal bands hail them as their influence(Marduk hava actually covered two songs of them)..........

Well, here is a thought/debate:

Can you name a band with a genre, when that genre hasn't been properly described/codified/evolved/'invented' yet?

IE: first wave of pretty much any (sub)genre.

Hellhammer might be one of the worst bands I've ever heard. Even so, they're still probably my favorite band of the first wave of black metal, followed by Bathory and To Mega Therion era Celtic Frost. I could never get into Mercyful Fate, the vocals just annoy me way too much.

I think King Diamond is badass and funny at the same time.
I also think Merciful Fate isn't Black Metal.
