ive seen guys like billy sheenan and danny growl use their fingers to play pinched harmonics on the bass. does anyone here have any insight on how they achieve this? thanks

i'm a guitarist, and i can tell you how you can pull off on a guitar..but if a bass has the same functions as a guitar, then the bass should be able to pick it up as well.
first thing you need is to get tons of distortion, and turn down your bass knob, and turn up your treble knob. that should help you pull it off easier

no no no.....
find the center of the string, plant your thumb(right), fret the note(left), and pluck the string and very quickly pull your thumb away

fine if you wanna get all technical about it.
even though this makes exactly the same sound... and is almost impossible on bass.
fret your harmonic note, and just slightly put your finger over the 4th of that note and pluck, you probably cant do this unless youve played upright for a couple years and you can do the whole "thumb" position thing.

im familiar with tapping out artificial harmonics on the bass ( like jaco or cliff burton). the technique im talking about is the same as a pinch harmonic on guitar, but im unfamiliar with how to accomplish this without a pick. i think sixsicsix is on to something. ill fuck around with it and see if i cant get it down.

Maybe its the same was as i i USED to pinch the bottom sting of a guitar becouse when i started out i didnt even use picks
so id fret a note but i would pluck with my middle finger and bring my index finger down to bareley touch it to get the harmonic nad they always sounded way better that whne i used picks and thumb to do it.

watch a vid of steve bailey... he uses it and the way he does it is quite simple
just put ur index fingeron top of the pickup not too much but just enough to give you that sound and play the note normally but with ur middle or ring finger
