alot smoother.
better for slides and a much cleaner vibrato.
kind of like a permanent chorus sometimes

Also, you can play quarter tones and replicate the sound of an acoustic/stand up bass better.

Many reasons... most of them have already been listed in here. Although my dad always said that frets "get in the way" and playing a fretless gives you a feeling of freedom.
