Sunn Alpha Slave
Anyone ever played one? Because I've never heard of this model.
I just bought one from e-bay because I've been looking for a Sunn for some time now and it was a good price. I figure with the high demand if I don't like it, I can resell it.

By the sounds of it, it's a slave amp- basically just a poweramp. On the Sunn amp that was meant to match this, it would have a 'slave out' on the back, so you could run 4 cabinets instead of two

I don't understand Power amps. Does this mean I can't use it as a regular amp.

A regular amp head has a preamp and a poweramp in it... the poweramp being made up of a 12ax7 tube and pair(s) or el34/6l6's... this is what the Slave head will have in it. The preamp does all of your tone-shaping etc.
Basically, you can't plug your guitar straight into it.

What if I put the guitar through a distortion pedal?
Goddamnit I'm pissed now. They guy advertised it as a guitar amp.

Yes, you can put your guitar through the distortion pedal. Basically, preamp (pedal) shapes the sound, whereas the poweramp (slave) does the actual amplification.
If you have a POD or similar, you should use that rather than the distortion pedal, as it will have better EQ. Otherwise, check out tube preamps. Sucks that you didnt realise though.

I have a Digitech mulit effects thingy that I never use, guess it'll get som playing time now. I'll just have to mess around with it to get a good tone.

Yeah those Sunn Alphas are meant to take the line out of smaller not-so-loud amps to give it extra volume. So it's pretty much the same as those Tech 21 Powerengines. I think these Sunns in particular are solid state too.
