Pat Metheny.
Is the motherfucking shit. American jazz artist, best jazz I've ever heard. It's highly melodic, memorable, and relaxing guitar oriented jazz. I suggest you get Bright Size Life, Watercolors, and New Chautauqua, excellent introduction to this guy and the entire jazz genre as a whole.
I hear Bill Frissel is similar too, anyone listen to him?

Fucking love this guy too man. Played "Lone Jack" (actually a Lyle Mays composition) for a music assessment (the CD recorded version) and achieved 9.5/10, I am ecstatic.
I need to get more of his stuff, though. I only have works from the Trio albums. 99 - 00 and Live double disc. I like the trio stuff a lot. Have posted this link many a time on these forums:

Are you referring to the Pat Metheny Group stuff? I have checked out a fair bit on youtube - sounded very cheesy poppy... I should look into his older stuff more, definantly, and I will. I hear he's quite an elitist asshole though. Oh well. That is to come with Jazz. Good thread  |

The old stuff cheesy/poppy? Uh nah not at all, just relaxed and enjoyable. Not like that song "Phase Dance" on one of the 80's records, I forget which, but not cheesy like that.
Metheny had some experimental noisecore project which pissed off a great deal of his fans, many asking him to disown the record but he told them to fuck off. If a jazz musician is open-minded enough to play something like noisecore I wouldn't say he's much of an elitist, as most jazzers show nothing but hatred and disgust towards anything with distorted electric guitars.
