Low Output vs High Output Pickups
I've always used high output ceramic pickups. However recently i ve been trying out a friends strat and lp with dimarzio vh pafs and virtual vintage pafs. And my god, i was blown away! they sounded so sweet for metal, they had a really unique sound and the lead tone was killer. The tone was really smooth yet it cut really well. You could also roll down the volume pot and get a useable clean. I never ever thought about using low output pickups before but i m now really thinking about it. The guitars were going through my marshall dsl100 and it really improved the overall sound.
What do you guys think? has anyone else used low output pups?

Yeah, I've played a Schecter with JB/59 and I liked the sound, awesome but I tend to like stupidly sensitive bridge pickups.
I'm probably selling my EMG 81 85 set to some dude this week, and I have an X2N and PAF pro laying around, but I'm also gonna sell the X2N and get a dimarzio Evo instead. Mostly cuz I want a high output passive that will match with my guitar, the white x2n is gonna ruin the uniform look of my black Ironbird.
So most likely I'm going to end up with the PAF Pro only in the bridge for a while. That's a medium-low output pup(300mV), always wanted to experiment with it in the bridge given a lot of my favorite guitarists use it there(Erik Rutan, Trey Azagthoth).

It's gotta be high output but at the same time, toneful, with character.

why does it have to be high output. Why not just leave a lot of the gain up to the amp?

Because we play metal for fuck's sake. Heh, because a hot input signal yields a different sound than cranking the gain knob on the amp. You generally don't want to be cranking the gain too high cause with many amps it'll start sounding like mush or starts making too much feedback or hum.
Using EMG's with my fireball, the gain stays at 11 o clock. With an 80's charvel with stock pickups, gain needs to be at 2 o clock, but it's still not the same. Not the same touch sensitivity, not the same resonance due to the lack of a potent magnet, not as much tightness due to not driving the input harder, etc.

do lower output pickups reduce the pick-attack sound? i have an X2N in my RG and i get a lot of pick attack sound when tremolo picking.

no, low output actually increases the sensitivity and pick response. They rely more on the guitars wood. Go try a dimarzio vhpaf in the bridge of a guitar and play it through a high gain amp. Sounds wicked

No, I replied like that accordingly because you claimed the amp was inferior to other more visually appealing amps simply because of the look.
Yeah, higher gain passive pickups do mask the wood's qualities quite a bit, but nowhere near as much as actives though.
