Ampeg ss-70 combo question (distortion)
I'm using an ampeg SS-70 combo amp, not a head. I am wondering if the amp is producing the maximum distortion it should be producing... When i use the same settings, plug the guitar into the "low frequency" jack, it produces the same sound as when i plug it into the "high frequency" jack, so i think something is fishy.
To give an example- on the high frequency jack, i have to put the distortion on 9-10 to get a death metal type tone. If i put it on 8-9, I start getting something along the lines of metallica tone, but kinda even less than that.
Is the way it should work, or do i have to take it in to a tech?
Is there less distortion because it is a 70 watt combo amp instead of a head?

The high input should be a little brighter and have a bit more gain than the low input, and you can probably tell if you listen to it clean or with gain on half. Its hard to hear a difference in tones when gain is maxed, or, the difference gets smaller as gain goes up.

The low input = CLEAN channel.
High input = br00t3l channel.
You should hear a huge difference in between the 2 channels. Clean can get some crunch nearly diming the gain, but not as brutal as the high gain channel. The last thing you need to do is dime the gain knob on these amps, especially the all-black ones unlike the older vintage looking blue-line ones that have a tad less gain.
The SS-70 is the same amp either in head or in combo form, just like the SS-140, SS-150, VH70, VH140 and all of it's counterparts. Run the head into a 4x12 and do the same with the combo and you will hear no difference, it's the same amp, just one is designed for portability.
We already established that your amp is defective/damaged and in need of a repair/servicing in another thread. Go do that now.

On my VH140c when I'm plugged into the low gain channel (which is never), the gain all the way up is pretty much the same as the gain at around 3.5 on the high gain channel. And the gain at 4 1/2 is plenty good enough for sick brutal death metal tone on the high gain channel. Something's up with your baby, take it to a tech to fix it!
