So you already bought one before asking for an opinion?
The cleans are sorta sterile but usable. The high gain tones are great though, tons of gain on tap, and a very tight voicing. Good midrange too, as in, you can have it way low or way high and get a great sound.

good amp for black metal, death metal and hardcore. I've even heard it in rock situations. Check out Probot's "Shake your Blood", thats some AWESOME 5150 tone.
hehehe the second clip looks like it was made by one of the BKP forum dudes.
man this thread just gave me a GAS attack... i might have to get a 5150 soon hahahah.

No i didn't buy it, but i have made arrangements for it, sort of. I have one on hand and will be inspecting it monday or so.. if it's fine I'll pay by cash and pick it up, and on the way sell the rack to some dude who lives in the middle of the 5150 and me
I have tested one years ago.. i remember it as some sort of dark tight hyper-gain Marshall tone.. very nice.. i remember having "the grin" the moment i powered it up and hit a chord.. massive sound. That's how i remember it..
I don't really use cleans though. Plus i have a cube and a POD too.. no worries if i need to record some clean phrase. I only play <insert anything here> metal

Get a 5150, and get that bias cranked up to the 35-40ma range depending on the tubes. It will melt your face.

It already has a bias mod, and a bypass mode for one of the preamp tubes (for a lead boost or clean/crunch switch).. I have a feeling I'll love this one. The problem with my old setup was just way too much tweakability. Too much knobs and buttons, never satisfied. I need one of those amps that'll sound good after 5 minutes of tweaking and great after an hour of tweaking.. not one that constantly changes sounds for weeks, letting me never decide..

I say go for it then, especially if the price is good.

Anyone got clips? Not the kind of "In Flames" stuff where they're just slowly playing chords, more like fast chugging then some open notes etc. This is a repair object so i need to know how it _should_ sound (i know what's wrong really, so I'm getting this dirt cheap)..
Thanks. I'm picking mine up tomorrow, i can't wait. Already equipped with JJ's in the pre and TADs for the poweramp. Sad thing TAD's aren't exactly amazing (chinese power tubes aren't exactly great), but i can retube the poweramp next month when i get paid

Well turns out there's a "bypass" mod on this thing.. which effectively just takes one of the preamp tubes out of the circuit, for less gain and a less "fuzzy" sound..
Do you guys think it'd be worth adding it in again? The sound turns mushy at gain around 7, I set it at around 6 so i def. don't need any more gain from it.. right now the distortion is very thick and chunky, very warm and full.. i keep treble 4 or so so maybe i should just leave it as it is? What do you guys think?

Nah. If anything, buy an overdrive pedal. You can never have too much gain!
Seriously though, overdrive pedals work well with 5150's, tighten the fuck out of them even more. This is the secret to the famous Carcass tone on Heartwork. 5150 + Marshall Guvnor OD, and some other old ss marshall in the mix too.
