I finally own a VH140c!
Damn Craig's List rules. I did a random search yesterday for "ampeg vh" and it so happened some dude was selling one about fifteen miles away from where I live. This is the ad I saw. That's right, $150, I was like "fuck me" and I called him right away. It was an earlier version of the head with the tone & control knobs on the top. He said the only thing wrong with it was that most of the knob caps fell off. We agreed to meet, so I brought over my Schecter, tested it out quick to make sure both poweramps were fine, everything was cool and functional so I thanked him and paid.
Holy fuck, I've been playing this thing all day, it's a bit hard to dial in tones due to most of the knob caps being gone (about to go to Guitar Center and buy some new knobs) but christ, this thing sounds -EXACTLY- like Suffocation and Gorguts tone (pretty much IDENTICAL to "Orphans Of Sickness" or "Synthetically Revived" if you can imagine those tones in person.) I've never been happier with an amp in my entire life. Since I'm running it into a mono cab I can't use the chorus (otherwise it sounds like a fucked up tape) but damn does this thing SLAY. It's also LOUD AS FUCK. This thing puts out so much damn low-end that my low knob on the distortion channel is at fucking ZERO and it's still brutal as shit. The mid knob is an ultra-mid and it's fucking superb, I can go from an old Dying Fetus-esque tone to a Carcass - Necroticism type tone with a slight turn of the knob. The gain knob is dope too, I can't BELIEVE how much gain this thing puts out. There's a certain sweet spot of about 3 numbers where you can get a range of this semi-saturated tone yet tight tone that just feels great. This is the best head I've ever played. I can't wait to order my Vader cab, I bet it'll sound a hundred times better than it does now. I'm floored.
To all those who want one, HANDLE THAT SHIT! You will not be dissapointed!

GRRR.......
I want one of these so bad, they simply are just too impossible to find down here.
Incidentally, I just picked up a Crate shockwave last night, and pretty much nails the same tone. Dying Fetus, Suffo, etc. Nice amp for the price, I was afraid it was going to sound the same as the other lower end models in the GT range. Took me 10 seconds to realise it was a whole different ballpark.
But yeah, anyone that cant come along an oldschool Ampeg, definately check out a Shockwave (if your're after that tone that is).

On eBay the combos are around $400, the heads (when they show up) around $500. Get one soon because the prices are starting to go up (Valtiel thinks it's all our fault apparently )

Holy fucking good deal Sycophant. I knew you'd be left shitless with it, anyone ever gets to lay hands on one knows what it's all about.
Yeah the old model, as a matter of fact, I hear the Ampegs with the knobs on top are actually a tad more reliable than the 2nd generation vh140cs! I've seen some pictures of Assück using that same version.
Congrats man. God damn do I ever want one. I'd be happy even with a SS-70 or VH-70 head, but I won't hold my breath looking for one, I'm happy with my Fireball.
*rounds up a bunch of cash and watches ebay*

I sent an email to Ampeg last night asking if they could send a manual and tell me the date it was made based off the serial. I got a reply this morning and my VH140c's birthday is March 1990 (pretty scary, considering I was 7 then and Super Mario Bros. 3 just came out!) Cheers back at you man, I know I will be keeping this baby forever.

I too am shocked that one is still on eBay, the last head on eBay I saw got snatched up right away through "buy it now" and it was the same 2nd edition type head. It'll be funny to see how long it takes someone to ball up and hit the "buy it now" button for this one. Someone will crack for sure.

Yeah I'm sure over a dozen metalhead teenagers were watching the auction from school and are waiting to get home to scour for some cash and bid on it. It'll be gone in no time.
